Zamfara APC youth group rejects Governor Lawal’s rumoured defection

A youth coalition under the banner of the Zamfara APC Integrity Network (ZAIN) has strongly rejected the speculated defection of Governor Dauda Lawal from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement signed by its president, Comrade Murtala Sani Gummi, and made available to journalists in Gusau on Monday, the group said it had credible intelligence suggesting that Governor Lawal was lobbying to join the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections in a bid to realign with the centre and retain political relevance.

The group, however, warned that such a move would backfire, noting that the APC in Zamfara and across Nigeria “cannot afford to inherit a non-performing politician.

“We want to make it categorically clear that Governor Dauda Lawal is not welcome in the APC and any attempt to accept him into the party will damage our chances in 2027. Zamfara has suffered under his administration,” Gummi said.

The group described Lawal’s rumoured defection as a desperate political move to ride on President Tinubu’s growing popularity in the North”.

“What Zamfara needs is visionary leadership — not recycled politicians jumping from party to party for personal survival. APC is rebuilding its structures, and we cannot afford to dilute that progress with someone whose record in office has been marked by blame games and inertia,” Gummi added.

The group urged the national leadership of the APC not to entertain the idea of accepting Lawal into the party, cautioning that such a move would dampen youth mobilisation efforts in the state.

“We are already building strong grassroots structures across all 14 local governments in Zamfara to ensure APC’s victory in 2027. Bringing Dauda Lawal into our fold will discourage the young people who believe in the President’s vision but reject failure at the local level,” Gummi added.

The group further noted that the APC youth wing in Zamfara is committed to supporting credible candidates who can align with the performance of President Tinubu and deliver real dividends of democracy.

“President Tinubu is working. The projects are visible. But Governor Lawal’s defection will be viewed as an opportunistic ploy and must be resisted.”

The group reaffirmed its loyalty to the APC and its determination to defend the party’s integrity in Zamfara State.

“As youths, we have the numbers, the energy, and the will. We will not allow anyone to hijack our structure and create division within the fold. The APC of 2025 is not a dumping ground for underperforming politicians.”

Defections excite APC national women leader Alile

The National Women Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Mary Alile, has expressed joy over the unprecedented influx of new members from various political backgrounds to the APC.

She described it as monumental shift that underscores the growing trust and confidence in the APC’s vision for a progressive Nigeria.

In a statement on Monday in Abuja, she thanked the leadership of the party and women across the country.

She noted that their dedication to grassroots mobilisation and advocacy had been a cornerstone of the APC’s expanding influence.

She said women must be continually empowered and supported to ensure sustained growth and success for the party.

The statement reads in part: “We particularly commend the recent defections in Delta State, where key political figures, including the sitting Governor, His Excellency Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, the entire State Executive Council, and other major stakeholders, have joined the APC.

“This significant realignment marks a new chapter in Delta State’s political landscape, reflecting a collective commitment to the ideals and developmental agenda of our party.”

“Niger State: Approximately 200 PDP members, including notable figures such as former House of Representatives member Hon. Abdullahi Mohammed Ricco, have defected to the APC in Munya Local Government Area.

“Sokoto and Zamfara States: Prominent PDP chieftains, including Alhaji Sahabi Bojo-Bodinga in Sokoto and Hajiya Madina Shehu in Zamfara, have led significant numbers of supporters to the APC, enhancing the party’s strength in these regions.

“Ondo State: In anticipation of the upcoming governorship election, hundreds of PDP and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) members have defected to the APC, indicating a shift in political allegiance ahead of the polls.

“We extend our profound appreciation to His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to national development, which have been instrumental in attracting new members to our party.

“We also commend the APC National Chairman and the entire National Working Committee for their strategic efforts in fostering unity and inclusivity within the party.”

Alile acknowledged the role of women in APC’s growth.

She added: “As the National Woman Leader, I recognise and celebrate the pivotal role women have played in this transformative period.

“Their dedication to grassroots mobilisation and advocacy has been a cornerstone of the APC’s expanding influence.

“We must continue to empower and support women to ensure sustained growth and success for our party.

Addressing party chieftains and members, Durodoye said: “At this point of my life, I have to contribute my quota to the development of Osun State, I want to donate my knowledge, experience and wealth to the development of our youth, our youth have no future, no mission, no goal, it is very sad.

“So I have to donate everything that I have not only to make Osun State great, but also a model state that others will learn from in education, health care delivery, science and technology, and empowerment, I can do it.”

The State Chairman of APC, Tajudeen Lawal, said: “All the aspirants that have shown interest are competent and have the abilities to govern Osun State. But your major aim should be how to wrestle power from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).”

APC members protest against emergence of chairmanship candidate

Aggrieved members and concerned stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State have protested against the emergence  of Adebayo Adefuye as the party’s chairmanship candidate for the council area.

The protesters were led by an APC stalwart, Olorunnimbe Ismail, urged the leaders of the party to “do the right thing” by allowing a free, fair, and transparent candidate selection process that reflects the will of the people of Yaba.

“We condemn the imposition of Adebayo Adefuye. He is not better than any of the aspirants contesting here in Yaba LCDA. He is not from this locality, he hails from Somolu Local Government and is not a resident of Yaba,” Hon. Ismail declared. “We are here because our voices must be heard, and we reject this injustice. This is our third protest, and we will not stop until our leaders listen to what the masses are saying.”

Among other reasons, the protesters emphasized that Adefuye was originally from Somolu and ‘’has no established residency in Yaba LCDA, which disqualifies him from representing the interests of the Yaba people effectively.

  • Soyinka, Amaechi and APC presidential primary

Soyinka, Amaechi and APC presidential primary

Speaking at the 60th birthday celebration of former Rivers State governor and ex-Transportation minister, Rotimi Amaechi, Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka was expansively humorous. In praising Mr Amaechi’s manner of pursuing his presidential ambition, the laureate said the former minister’s intransigence reminded him of the stubborn refusal of President Bola Tinubu (as Lagos State governor) to yield to ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo’s political and financial pressures to abandon the creation of 37 extra local governments in Lagos. The laureate said he derived ‘rascally pleasure’ in seeing Mr Amaechi stubbornly refusing to drop out of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary in June 2022 when nearly every other aspirant was dropping out of the race. In a delicate, and perhaps eerie, extrapolation of that intransigence some three years ago, Mr Amaechi has sustained his adamancy and opposition to the same Bola Tinubu who defeated him in that race and went on to win the presidency the following year.

The bigger story of the 2022 primary is not of course the intransigence of any of the aspirants, or the concessions of the curious handful. What defined the primary and swung the votes was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary conducted barely a week earlier on May 29, 2022, over which former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike has continued to have an axe to grind with PDP leaders and electors who jettisoned his aspiration in favour of former vice president Atiku Abubakar. Unknown to him, instead of confining themselves to their party’s rotational principles, they anticipated the victory of APC’s Bola Tinubu in the ruling party’s primary a week later and were anxious to secure the services of a champion who could fight for the crown and give a good account of himself. They imagined that Mr Wike, had he emerged the PDP candidate, would be eaten raw by Bola Tinubu. So they gambled on the APC outcome by preemptively securing for themselves a deep pocket champion.

Meanwhile, APC leaders and electors who had spent weeks pussyfooting around Aso Villa and gallivanting between powerful interest groups around the country and APC governed states were greatly consternated by the PDP’s deft anticipation and calculations. Instead of leaving the primary to chance, in a sort of ‘may the best man win’, they borrowed logic from the PDP and resolved to secure a champion who could ‘outstrategise and outspend’ Alhaji Atiku. Mr Amaechi’s recalcitrance and Mr Wike’s fulminations meant nothing to the PDP and APC overlords. They faced a historic election, and they were sure that rather than engage in fancy footwork, they needed to put their best feet forward. And they did so, with brutal efficiency and ‘devil may care’ frankness. Had the PDP sustained their realpolitik to the campaigns, with Alhaji Atiku opting for the most savage and unfeeling methods to prosecute his election, probably his last, he would have found the ultimate weapon, financial or political, to placate the aggrieved Peter Obi, and unite the party behind him. In the end, he could not rejig the party’s formula for holding political offices, and then followed up by spitting on the political grave of the enraged Mr Wike.

On the other side of the aisle, the more astute and unassuming candidate Tinubu, who had been humiliated and humbled for more than two years before his party’s primary and thus had no airs about him, did everything possible, political and financial, to mollify his APC opponents. Those who held out against his blandishments or mollification were then isolated and neutralised. The APC and PDP candidates thus went into the 2023 presidential election with contrasting styles, thereby losing or winning the poll even before the first ballot was cast. Despite the clumsy and hugely disruptive intrusion of the Labour Party’s Peter Obi, which turned the election into a three-horse race, it was all but clear who the voters and the dithering presidency thought was the frontrunner. Their inability to cut that frontrunner to size was not due to a lack of effort as it was due to a lack of tactical brilliance. Once he became the front runner and sensed it, and knowing that the country’s political dynamics favoured a southern candidate, he pushed his luck, said many a gaffe, but managed to prevent himself from propounding anything that would scare anybody. His refrain at every campaign stop was simple, almost inelegant, but decidedly poignant and provocative, embellishing the country’s political dictionary and arresting the people’s wandering and often jejune thoughts.

And candidate Bola Tinubu won. Of all the footnotes of the 2023 presidential race, Mr Amaechi’s was the least significant. That of Mr Wike, which saw him carve a significant slice of the votes from Alhaji Atiku, was far more impactful, second only to the seismic electoral effect the unreflective Mr Obi brought upon the poll. Next time, in the face of Nigeria’s notoriously compromised pollsters whose predictions are always way off the mark, pundits should scrutinise the primaries to find clues as to the underlying dynamics capable of tilting the outcome of any general election. They will find, in the kitchen midden of the primaries, enough clues as to who will win, sometimes by a huge margin in the event of a two-horse race. They should never allow themselves to be distracted by the wailings and moaning of the Amaechis and Wikes, as crucial as they sometimes pretend to be.

Dafinone rallies support for Tinubu, hails Oborevwori’s defection to APC

In a powerful show of party unity and political realignment, Senator Ede Dafinone( Delta Central) has called on Deltans and Nigerians to remain steadfast in their support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, assuring that the nation will begin to reap the benefits of the president’s bold economic reforms before the year runs out.

Speaking at a high-level APC stakeholders’ unity meeting in Jesse, Ethiope West LGA, Dafinone lauded Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and other Delta PDP leaders for their recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as “strategic and timely” for the future of Delta State.

“The alignment with the APC-led Federal Government is not just political — it’s developmental. It will fast-track federal appointments, projects, and resources to our people,” Dafinone declared. “This is not about winners and losers; we are all winners for Delta State.”

Addressing fears over the ongoing APC e-registration exercise, the Senator dismissed rumours that it was designed to sideline existing members. “That’s a wicked lie,” he said. “This registration is open to everyone — from the PDP, new entrants, and even APC members who haven’t registered before. In the new APC, everyone is equal.”

He emphasised that the unity between Ethiope East and West must be driven by collaboration, not competition. “This is a new APC — one without divisions. Everybody matters. From the grassroots to the top, our goal is collective progress.”

Dafinone also praised President Tinubu for taking bold but necessary economic steps, especially on fuel subsidy removal and exchange rate reform.

“Yes, the times have been tough,” he admitted. “But the reward for those hard decisions is near. Prosperity is coming — not just for Nigeria, but for Delta State and the Ethiope region.”

He ended his remarks with a pledge of continued service, noting, “When the time comes, I’ll return to ask for your support again. If I’ve served well, you’ll back me for the second half — just like football.”

Also speaking at the event, political leader Senator Ighoyota Amori assured the party faithful of a smooth and united transition to the 2027 elections.

“In 2027, we’ll have a record-free primary and enter the elections as one Ethiope. Judging by the calibre of people here today, we’re set to deliver 100%.”

Party chieftain Emmanuel Ighomena echoed the same sentiment, declaring, “This is a new dawn in Delta politics. We once walked separate paths, but now we are one. 2027 will be our best election yet.”

He urged long-time opposition members to seize the opportunity and remain within the APC. “They’ve been in opposition for over 20 years. Now that power is in their hands, they want to walk away? Stay, and develop your communities under His Excellency’s leadership,” he advised.

Earlier, Chief Anthony Akpomiemie, Chairman of the Organising Committee, welcomed guests with a rallying message of unity and responsibility. “This gathering is a reaffirmation of our commitment to the ideals of APC. It’s a strategic step to strengthen our bonds across Ethiope East and West, and position our federal constituency for a prosperous future,” he stated.

The event was graced by key party figures including Chief Sunny Onoriode, Hon. Arthur Akpowhowo, Chief Paulinus Akpeki, and Rt. Hon. Halims Agoda—all of whom echoed the call for unity within the party. “The time for division is over. We must come together and build a cohesive APC that reflects our shared aspirations,” Chief Amori stressed.

Hon. Halims Agoda, a former House of Representatives member, moved a motion for a vote of confidence on President Tinubu and Governor Oborevwori. “They have shown exemplary leadership. Our confidence in them is not just emotional—it’s based on tangible governance,” he stated. The motion was seconded by Hon. Barr. Akpodiogaga Sunny Emeyese received unanimous approval.

The unity meeting also served as a platform to dispel misconceptions and reassure grassroots supporters of the party’s inclusiveness. “There are no winners and losers in the new APC,” Dafinone concluded. “We are all in this together—for the prosperity of Delta, Ethiope Federal Constituency, and Nigeria as a whole.”
