  • Demote coronet Obas appointed by Amosun, committee tells Gov. Abiodun

THE Chieftaincy Review Committee (CRC) set up by Governor Dapo Abiodun to review the appointments of 75 coronet Obas in Ogun State by the immediate past governor, Ibikunle Amosun, hours to his exit from office, on May 28, has submitted its report, on Friday, recommending that the affected monarchs revert to their previous positions as Baales (minor chiefs).

The committee noted, that, some of the coronet Obas were upgraded contrary to due process. They were allegedly promoted from the lower rank of Baale to coronet Oba by Amosun’s administration without the knowledge of their respective prescribed authorities.

Speaking while presenting the report to Governor Abiodun in his Oke – Mosan Governor office, in Abeokuta, the state capital, the Chairman of the Committee, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, regretted that the prestige of the traditional institution had nosedived over the years, and gradually lost its respect due to political interference.

Olugbenle, who doubles as the Olu of Ilaro and Paramount ruler of Yewaland, advised politicians to tread with caution when handling issues concerning traditional rulers and the institution as their involvement in traditional matters was gradually weakening and rendering it ineffective.

Olugbenle added that if the affected traditional rulers are to be upgraded to Obas, proper procedures should be followed or adopted.

“It is absurd to see traditional rulers in political robes. As natural rulers, they are to see all the people as their children, irrespective of political affiliations.

“Baales are minor Chiefs. Their upgrade should be recommended by their appointive authorities who are first class obas.

“Some coronets Obas were upgraded without their prescribed authorities’ knowledge and we have recommended that they remain Baales. If they are to be upgraded, the requirements should be followed,” Olugbenle said.

Responding, Abiodun tasked traditional rulers to ensure peace and security to guarantee the safety of lives and property of people in their respective domains.

The Governor said, as natural rulers, they were closer to the people and know the goings – on in their domains.

“We know what your roles in the society. You are not politicians. You know those in yours domains. Please ensure peace and security in your domains,” Governor Abiodun pleaded.

He disclosed that the Chieftaincy disputes were becoming a security challenge that threatens peace in the state, saying that he was confident that the committee had done its best in finding solutions to these lingering issues.

The Governor who made this known in a release by his Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin, commended the Committee for working assiduously towards arriving at workable recommendations.

He assured the committee that government would study, review and come up with appropriate policy decisions that would help reposition and strengthen the traditional institution.

Meanwhile, members of the Ogun State Elders Consultative Forum have applauded Governor Abiodun for setting up Committees to look into various issues affecting the State.

The coordinator of the forum, Taiwo Alimi, who gave the commendation when the forum paid a courtesy call on the state Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun in his office at the Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, said the committees were necessary to know the problems on the ground with a view to finding solutions to them, as “something cannot be build on nothing”.

She said members of the forum have dedicated themselves to the service of the State and have carried out some works in the past which they believe would help the present administration achieve its set goals.

Another member of the forum, Prof. Biyi Afonja, urged the Governor to be equitable in the distribution of infrastructure and social amenities to all parts of the state to enable the people feel a sense of belonging.

Responding, the State Governor, Abiodun, said he would tap from the experience of the elder statemen and women in running the affairs of Ogun State.

Prince Abiodun noted that the state was lucky to have such an array of successful elders who have distinguished themselves and done the State proud in their various fields of human endeavours.

He said as a result of their commitment, sacrifice and resourcefulness, other states have become envious of the state, just as their dedication, industry and intergrity as made the State first among equal.

“It is unwise to do away with the wise counsel and wisdom of the elders. We will tap from our referred elders to reposition our economy, education, education and other sectors to the benefit of our people”, Governor Abiodun said.

  • Abiodun sets agenda to grow local economy

Ogun State governor, Prince  Dapo Abiodun, says he wants the proposed 2020 budget to be a springboard for implementation of its administration’s economic developmental plan that seeks to create wealth and re-position the economic well-being of the people.

Abiodun stated this at a sensitisation programme by the Ministry of Budget and Planning to enlighten stakeholders across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) on the vision of his administration towards the preparation of year 2020 budget.

The governor said his administration was already undertaking necessary amendments on the Security Trust Fund, a new bill to establish Public Works Agency, the Public Private Partnership (PPP) and Ogun Invest Promotion Bill, among others, to accelerate economic and developmental plan of the state.

Harping on the focus of his administration for the next fiscal year, Abiodun said the amendment bill already transmitted to the House of Assembly would ensure the state becomes safer and conducive for investors and investments through the provision of state-of-the-art security gadgets and equipment for security agencies. He added that similar synergy was already being planned to tighten security in South West States through a joint task force to be put in place by the governments of Ogun, Lagos, Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti states to address increasing security unrests pervading the zone in recent times.

On road infrastructure, he said the attention of his administration would shift to developing township and rural roads to stimulate the local economy, noting that efforts were also in top gear to initiate a bill that will establish the Public Works Agency in order for local technicians and professions in the building sector to create wealth for themselves as government was ready to employ people living within the corridors of the roads to be constructed to work on such projects.

The governor also hinted on how his administration seeks to engage more youths and provide food security through agriculture. In this regard, Abiodun said the federal government has endorsed the partnership between the state government and the Central Bank of Nigeria to engage 10,000 youths by making available a hectare of land for each youth.

Abiodun noted that while the CBN would assist in clearing the land, provide seedlings, the state government would render extension services just as the CBN would ensure buy-back mechanism.

  • Leave Buhari, Tinubu, Osoba out of my cabinet list delay — Dapo Abiodun

He also warned that serving as a commissioner in his government will not be a jamboree, because every appointee will be made to sign a performance bond to meet a set target within a stipulated period, failing which he or she will be kicked out.

Governor Abiodun also dispelled the rumour that he was bitter about the emergence of Architect Lekan Adegbite, the candidate of his immediate predecessor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, as the ministerial nominee from the state, saying that whoever emerged as the ministerial nominee would not diminish his plans to deliver quality service to the people of the state.

He asked indigenes of the state who are used to the lousy style of some governors to prepare their minds for a huge disappointment if they expect him to adopt same, because it had never been his style to be loud, much less make a show of any action he has to take.

He was reacting to a question as to why he was yet to be seen on the television and other media platforms like some of his counterparts, ordering the demolition of structures or taking some other rascally actions to give the impression that they are working.

“If I am not making a noise, it is because it is never in my nature to do so. I will rather do what I want to do without necessarily making a noise about it,” he said.

He recalled that in the build-up to the 2019 elections, he came under pressure from many concerned people who felt that he had yielded the media space completely to his rivals. He said that when the pressure became intense, he decided to honour an invitation extended to him by a popular television station to appear for an interview, but it turned out to be one of the most embarrassing moments of his life.

He said for reasons he could not fathom, his interlocutor became so aggressive and sentimental such that he came away with the impression that the interviewer was doing someone’s bidding.

He said: “I had never been so embarrassed. I only stopped short of asking the interviewer, ‘Did someone pay you to do this to me?’ There and then, I decided that we would do the rest of our campaign quietly. And as God would have it, we came out victorious.”

He was quick to add, however, that his position should not be construed to mean that he considers talking to the media as noisemaking, saying that he sees the media as partners in progress.

“If I had not been talking to the media or granting media interviews before now, it is probably because I was media shy,” he said, vowing that all that would change now that he is in the saddle as the governor of Ogun State, because he will have to continuously reach out to the people that elected him as their governor.

The governor had started the media interaction by rolling out his plans for the state in such areas as education, health, agriculture, security, infrastructural development and job creation, which he said were all aimed at making life easier for the people of the state.

On education, for instance, he said the state government had resolved to build one standard primary school in each of the 216 wards in the state as the first step in the effort to rescue the sector from decay. The state government, he said, is planning to build farm settlements around the state, equipped with extension services as the first step in his administration’s effort to turn the state into the nation’s food basket.

The governor said there were plans to revive the dilapidated government-owned hospitals around the state towards making efficient health care services available to the people. Already, he said, a panel had been raised by his government to look into the conditions of Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) and make the necessary recommendations for its revival.

He said there were plans to rebuild many of the state’s strategic roads, including the Atan-Agbara Road and others at the state’s borders with Lagos. He noted that apart from the jobs that these would generate for the hordes of unemployed youths in the state, there are other deliberate plans aimed at job creation.

Asked how he intended to generate funds for the numerous programmes he had outlined, Governor Abiodun said the plank for funding would be private/public partnership (PPP). This option he believes would not be difficult to explore, given his background as a businessman with lots of goodwill in the private business sector.

  • Abiodun mourns ex-deputy governor

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has expressed great sorrow over the death of former Deputy Governor Alhaji Abdul Rafiu Ogunleye, saying his death was shocking.

Abiodun, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Kunle Somorin, described Ogunleye as an astute administrator and a politician par excellence, who contributed immensely to the socio-economic and political development of Ogun State.

The governor attributed the development currently being enjoyed by the people to the efforts of people like the deceased, who worked tirelessly to ensure that the state attains its current status.

He said he had hoped that the former deputy governor would live longer so that his administration would continue to tap from his wealth of experience for the benefit of the people of the state.

  • Living in fear harmful to economy, says Ogun governor

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, at the weekend, said that the economy of a country or a state would be adversely affected when citizens live in fear.

He was speaking with State House correspondents after the Presidential Policy Retreat at the State House, Abuja.

The governor said: “The minute people begin to leave in fear, the minute people begin to have that foreboding fear that something may happen their way, it would kill the economy of the state and the country.

“I mentioned to them (at the retreat) that only last night (Wednesday) there was a kidnap situation on Lagos-Ibadan expressway, and in the morning of Thursday on my way to this conference, there was an attempt to kidnap four people, they kidnapped two and two escaped.

“That Lagos-Ibadan expressway is the busiest highway in this country; not only that, it is so important to the economy of my state, Lagos State and the entire country.

“How do we say we are creating an enabling environment for a public-private partnership when people cannot move freely from Lagos-to Ogun hinterland without the fear of being kidnapped?” he queried.

The governor noted that there was need to provide adequate security on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which, he said, is the busiest highway in the country and very important to the economy of the country.

He said: “So, we spent a lot of time on security because security is very important and I recall that I mentioned the fact that for me and Lagos, Ogun stands to benefit from everything that Lagos cannot provide.

“We are there to provide what Lagos cannot afford to have and that is why we are called the Gateway State. We are gateway to at least four states and we are also border to another country.”

He added: “We spoke about road infrastructure, different funding mechanism in agriculture and we spoke about healthcare. There was the emphasis that states should take ownership of healthcare and agriculture.

“The former Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Hailemariam Desalegn Boshe, shared with us the Ethiopian’s model, which to us was a complete contrast of the Brazilian model.

“The Brazilian’s model encouraged farm settlements but the Ethiopian model was a complete contrast to the Brazilian mode. The Ethiopian model was more like the Asian model where you encourage small farmers, youth and graduates, give them ownership of farms and you have what is called farmers’ trainees.

“It was such an insightful opportunity. I think that the conclusions of the last 48 hours should be adopted. I don’t see any reason why it should not be adopted, because the President recapped everything and gave out commitment to ensuring the implementation.”

  • We need your support to succeed, Abiodun tells financial institutions

GOVERNOR Dapo Abiodun has declared that the state government needs the support of all stakeholders, especially financial institutions, to carry out its agenda towards taking the state to the next level.

Abiodun said his administration is poised at repositioning the health, education, infrastructure and the agricultural sectors, as well as revamping security apparatus to effectively protect the lives and properties of the people.

The governor made this known at the weekend in his Oke-Mosan Governor’s Office, Abeokuta, when he received a team from the Wema Bank Plc, led by its Group Managing Director, Mr. Demola Adebise, who visited him.

He also disclosed that his administration would leverage on all the intervention programmes of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in the agricultural sector to make the state the food basket of the nation.

He called on the bank to be a major player in the state’s developmental drive by participating actively in the Security Trust Fund.

“We will lay emphasis on security, knowing full well that being the gateway state, hoodlums will like to move from the neighbouring states and countries to cause havoc here, “he said.

He reiterated plans by the state and Lagos to set up a commission to deal with issues concerning physical planning, security and taxes, stressing also that roads linking neighbouring states would be rehabilitated to ease movement of goods and services.

According to him, a one-stop shop would be put in place to ensure ease of doing business in the state.

He said government was working towards reducing the large number of unemployed youths in the state by establishing vocational training centres to provide training on tilling, carpentry, shoe making, fashion design, among others, to make them self-reliant.

He reiterated his resolve to provide focused and qualitative leadership that would guarantee good governance, affirming that premium would be given to workers welfare to encourage them to put in their best for the good of the people.

  • Suspended Ogun local govts’ chairmen threaten legal action

The 20 suspended local government chairmen and heads of 37 local council development areas (LCDA) in Ogun State on Thursday asked Governor Dapo Abiodun to reinstate them back to their positions.

They threatened to commence legal action against the government and House of Assembly over their alleged suspension, if not reinstated.

They made the demand at a news conference addressed at the Ikeja chamber of their counsel, Monday Ubani.

The House of Assembly had on May 3 passed  a resolution suspending political functionaries at the LGs and LCDAs.

Following the resolution of the assembly, the state government froze all LGs’ and LCDAs’ bank accounts.

But, the local government chairmen described their suspension as “illegal, unconstitutional and void”, having been duly elected by the people of the state for a four years term, which expires in October.

Ubani stated that they took the decision to approach the court having unsuccessfully explore several avenues to make the Ogun State government and House Assembly to reverse their suspension.

The lawyer  also alleged that since the suspension of the council chairmen, the state government and its cronies have been meddling with the bank accounts of the local governments.

He urged the National Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) to investigate the matter.

The lawyer said since assuming office  nearly four years ago, majority of the council chairmen have not been paid for over 33 months and have only received N500,000 as security vote from the state government.

Ubani said: “The decision to freeze the LG/LCDA bank accounts and their suspension before the expiration of their tenure, based on purported petitions which they were not given an opportunity to respond to is a gross violation of their constitutionally guaranteed fundamental right to fair hearing, and hence cannot stand.

“Even if fair hearing was given to them before the decision to suspend them was reached, no law gives power to either the state governor or state House of Assembly to suspend, terminate or abridge the tenure of the duly elected council executives, having been duly elected by their constituents and certificated by Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission.

“Any such act amount to reckless abuse of Executive/Legislative power, which must be checked in order to protect our nascent democracy.

“On behalf of our clients, we demand their immediate reinstatement and payment of all their entitlements for the past 33 months, which they have been denied, as stated above be computed and paid to them with effect from  October 10, 2016, when they were duly sworn into office as LG and LCDA chairmen till October 10, 2019 when they are expected to leave office.

“We also demand N500,000,000.00 as damages for the infringement on their fundamental right as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended and the hardship they have suffered as a result of willful deprivation of their entitlements as council executives.”

Also speaking on behalf of the suspended council chairmen, Adebayo Osikomaiya, representing Ijebu East Central LCDA, denied reports that they were suspended due to alleged embezzlement.

He noted that before the suspension was announced, the 8th House of Assembly oversight committee had clear them of all allegations of financial misappropriation.
