  • We’ll treat all parts of Ogun equally, says Abiodun

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has assured the people of Yewaland that his administration would not shortchange them in the scheme of things.

He said all sections of the state would be treated equally.

Abiodun, who addressed the people at Owode Yewa in Yewa South Local Government Area after inspecting the State Hospital and Model School at Ilaro and the Ilaro-Owode road, said his visit to the area was to see things for himself.

The governor said local government areas have been directed to forward the list of three priority roads to the state government for urgent attention, adding that a primary health centre and primary school will be rehabilitated in each ward across the state to provide quality health care and education to the people.

He informed the people that his administration was encompassing, adding that an employment portal would be opened to register graduates, skilled and unskilled youths, urging youths in the area to take advantage of the opportunity.

He lauded the people for their support during the election, but expressed disappointment at the slow pace of work on the Ilaro-Owode road.

Abiodun wondered why a road contract awarded about two years ago had not recorded meaningful progress.

He said the contractor handling the project has been summoned to a meeting in his office to explain why the project was slow, assuring the people that the road would be completed.

Also speaking, the Olu of Ilaro, and Paramount ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, pleaded with the government to provide the State Hospital at Ilaro with modern facilities and adequate medical personnel as the structures were still in good condition.

  • We won’t allow Benin take oil-rich Tongeji Island – Abiodun

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has declared that his administration would not allow the-oil rich Tongeji Island, an island that shares boundary with the Republic of Benin, to be taken away by Nigeria’s neighbouring country.

Abiodun said his administration is determined to do all in its power to make life meaningful for the citizens of the state living within the Island located in Ipokia Local Government area of the state.

The governor who made this known at the weekend when he received the Nigerian Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Ambassador Emmanuel Kayode Oguntuase, and the Flag Officer Commanding Western Region(FOC), Rear Admiral Oladele Daji, noted that the Island had been on his administration’s radar because of its huge deposit of petroleum resources.

According to him, the Island is of huge interest to his administration.

Abiodun said the visit of the ambassador would only make his administration to act even quicker and ensure that the Republic of Benin that shares boundary with the state does not take advantage of the Island.

He added that the state government would set up a team to visit the Island soon on a fact-finding mission and to find out what could be done to assure the people of the area that they have not been forgotten.

The governor further disclosed that his administration had informed the Federal Ministry of Petroleum that the Island was of huge interest to the state government, adding that his government had also begun discussions with investors on the way forward.

In his remark, Oguntuase disclosed that his visit to the state governor was to intimate him on happenings in the area as the closest to the Island, adding that it was important to let the over one thousand inhabitants of the Island to feel government’s presence, as the Republic of Benin was presently trying hard to lure the people and take over the Island because of the huge petroleum resources embedded beneath the ground.

  • Ogun to set up cattle ranch soon, says Abiodun

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has unveiled plans to establish a world class cattle ranch through the Public Private Partnership arrangement.

Abiodun said his administration considered the opportunity the agricultural sector brings to the table very important, explaining that agriculture is one of the biggest pillars of the  administration, which could help boost the state’s  Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and  reduce unemployment.

The governor spoke at the Oke-Mosan Governor’s Office, Abeokuta, the state capital, when he received a team from Irish Dairy Milk.

For us in Ogun State, besides the fact that we are looking at agriculture as a sector, we are looking at livestock as well, we believe that our proximity to other states gives us the advantage of being able to feed them as well via poultry.

  • League of political parties to LP, Akinlade: withdraw your petitions against Abiodun

THE League of Registered Political Parties, Ogun State chapter and 2019  governorship  candidates forum have advised the two factions of the Labour Party (LP) and candidate of the Allied People’s Movement (APM), Adekunle Akinlade, to withdraw their separate petitions challenging the declaration of Governor Dapo Abiodun as winner of the March 9, 2019 governorship polls.

The group said Abiodun of the All Progressives Congress (APC) needs to concentrate to deliver dividend of democracy for the people, hence the call on Akinlade and LP factions to withdraw their petitions in the interest of peace.

The group also said they were driven by selfless interest and not influenced by anybody or politicians to appeal to litigants to withdraw their cases in court or at the tribunal.

Addressing reporters on behalf of over a dozen other colleagues present at their secretariat in Akin Olugbade area of Abeokuta during a news conference, the governorship candidate of Independent Democrats (ID) during the last general elections, Otunba Adebayo Mosuro, urged Akinlade to withdraw “all litigations against” Abiodun.

Mosuro noted that Akinlade has the right to seek redress in court in respect of the March 9, 2019 governorship poll.

He advised the APM’s flagbearer to borrow a leaf from other governorship candidates such as Prince Gboyega Isiaka of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), who had embraced Abiodun and joined hands with him to move the state forward.

According to the spokesman of the League of Registered Political Parties and 2019  governorship  candidates’ forum, it is the people of Ogun State, who stand to lose when the governor is kept distracted from the onerous task of governance with needless litigations.

He also called on the governor to be magnanimous in victory by ensuring that every political party and candidate that participated in the last elections is made to feel a sense of belonging in his government of “inclusiveness”.

  • Osinbajo, Kukah, Abiodun: Religion has become divisive

VICE President Yemi Osinbajo on Monday lamented that religion has often been deployed to create division, spread hate and unleash violence on one another.

Osinbajo added that notwithstanding the negative use of religion, it still remained a veritable tool for a national and global development, stressing that the Federal Government would continue to use the mandate given by the people to cater for the welfare of the citizens.

The vice president spoke during the Ninth Toyin Falola annual international conference at Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun state.

The conference, put together by the institution, had “Religion, the state and global politics”, as its theme.

Osinbajo, who was represented by the Registrar, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, also noted that religion in Nigeria has not been properly understood.

The vice president, who described the theme of the conference as germane to the prevailing situation in the country, said: “The Interface between religion and the state was limited to issue of secularism, secularisation and separation of power between state and religion.

“Contemporary scholarships have, however, noted that religion covertly or overtly, places more role in human and societal lives, than previously acknowledged.

“Religion is a veritable tool for a national and global development.

“On the other hand, religion has often been used or implicated as a divisive factor, often employed as instrument to spread hate and unleash violence over one another.

“It is therefore expected that this conference will make its finding available to the federal republic of Nigeria for the improvement for the welfare of all.”

Also speaking, former President Olusegun Obasanjo said many Nigerians wish the country well daily but expressed concern that there are also others who want to leave Nigeria on the supposition that they were not getting the best out of it.

Obasanjo, who was the distinguished guest of honour, said the country may not move forward if it continues to lose its identity to diversity.

The elder statesman who presented a paper titled: “Towards a re-unification of the sacred and secular: religious interventions in politics,” declared that both religious leaders and politicians are linked together.

He said: “You can’t take one and leave the other. You can’t take politics and leave religion and you can’t take religion and leave politics, they are together.

“It ought to be that way, politics without religion, I don’t know what you would call it; they both affect the welfare and the well-being of all of us as we live in life.

“As far as religion is concerned, there are two issues; diversity and identity.

“We are so badly handling our diversity that we are losing our identity. As long as we are doing that, we are going nowhere.

“The management of diversity must be right, religion, politics and ethnicity are parts of our diversity which must be well managed.

“When you mismanage diversity with impunity, it is particularly annoying. It can lead to what we may not want it to lead to.

“I don’t know of any Nigerian who doesn’t wish Nigeria well, but, I know many Nigerians who are unhappy and want to leave Nigeria.

“Our issue is so because, what they expect from Nigeria they are not getting it. The role of religious leaders and religion is to lead but, lead them also to also to let politicians learnt a best lesson.

“God is a Nigerian because, what we have gone through in Nigeria and what we are going through, probably, Nigeria should not be on the map of the world. That’s why I say God is a Nigerian.”

In his keynote address, the Bishop of Sokoto Diocese of the Catholic Church, Bishop Kukah, who spoke on Caesar and God: Prophetic engagement of the state in Africa, said religion has failed in Africa.

“Only in Nigeria we can go to war because of religion, We are not going to go to war because, of no water ; we are going  to go to war because, we don’t have road . BUT, we are not going to go to war because we don’t have decent housing, we are not going to go to war because of lack of salary, we are not going to go to war because of injustice, but we can go to war in the name of God.

“Nigeria seems to be like a polygamist who is married with two wives. Somehow, Christians are complaining that they are treating Muslims better; Muslims are complaining that they are treating Christians better.

“But, nobody is complaining whether religion is getting its due. But essentially, my argument is that, unless religion through some of us who are leaders and practitioners find itself rescued from the clutches of politics and politicians the wrong notion will continue as it is in Nigeria. Somehow religion will be a problem.”

To Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, religion in Nigeria has become a divisive, when it should have been a unifying factor.

Abiodun said the effects of mismanagement of religious beliefs have made Nigerians to see one another as different, divisible units with varied worldviews, rather than seeing themselves as one entity of humanity.

He said: “In the past, we have always assumed that religion and the State are two different entities. But recent events have continued to lay bare the fact that the connections between religion and the State are increasingly relevant.

“We have continued to see demonstrations that most of peoples’ actions and commitments are derivable from their religious beliefs.

“If we have to talk about security, peace, co-existence and even, socio-economic development, we cannot divorce religion.

“In recent times, the global community has been confronted with acts of terrorism which have been tied to religion, whether rightly or wrongly.

“What is more confounding is the fact that these acts of terrorism are also supposedly sponsored by politicians against the state, and, or by the government against another government.

“In Nigeria, we have had more than our own fair share of acts of violence which some quarters have tied to religion, and even the state.”

  • Challenges before Dapo Abiodun

Of the last-minute theatrics displayed by the then outgoing governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, the most bizarre and grotesque was the installation of 75 traditional rulers on a whim. Never in the history of this great state has such level of desecration of traditional institution taken place. Amosun distributed Obaship titles like confetti. It is important to note the press report which indicated Amosun’s Obas were being installed on a daily basis – his own brand of departure gift to the poor masses in our rural communities – up to the last few hours of his exit from power on May 29. You woke up in the morning and thought about the next tantrums to throw. You descended on the sacred traditional institution and upset the apple cart.

One cannot but agree with the current governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for describing the queer action of his predecessor as “unprecedented in the history of our traditional institution” and his desire to retrieve the highly revered Obaship institution from disrepute to which it had been plunged by the sacrilege committed by the former governor. The Ogun State House of Assembly must be commended for its resolution “suspending all traditional rulers appointed and promoted from February, till May 28, during the last minutes of Governor Amosun.”

So much has been remarked in recent times on the monumental waste of the scarce resources of Ogun State on 15 model schools (or were they 25?) that littered the woods of the state. Each of the school was said to have been built at a cost of over N1 billion, yet only one of them is partly functioning while the others are left to the mercy of the elements, reptiles and area boys. It is haunting to observe that while the waste on model schools was going on, Amosun, allegedly, was paying his political appointees half salaries and owing the civil servants pension and cooperative deductions. But more regrettable to the private residents like me who manage their own businesses and pay tax to the coffers of Ogun State government is that such colossal amount of money should have gone into renovating the dilapidated public schools that litter the entire nooks and crannies of our state.

But a greater harm that befell the education sector can be viewed from the prism of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) which the ex-governor purportedly converted to Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology (MAUTECH) without the wherewithal to nurture the new institution. It is instructive to note the media reports that while the ex-governor was busy converting, on paper, MAPOLY to MAUTECH, the staff of Tai Solarin College of Education were being owed 24 months’ salaries! When you consider the fact that MAPOLY, then Ogun State Polytechnic, had produced many leading lights in this country and  was probably the most flourishing institution, being able to substantially generate and pay its staff’s salaries as and when due, the disruption caused by Amosun’s misadventure is most galling. The former governor, by his decision, crippled MAPOLY and for two years, the students could not advance in their studies; no new intake and salaries of workers could not be paid. Amosun’s thoughtless policy killed MAPOLY, a once flourishing institution.

Therefore, one was pleased to read from ThisDay, a news report indicating that “Dapo Abiodun has ordered that the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta should revert its activities to the way things were before with full activities restored. Governor Abiodun also set up a committee to see to the operational modalities of the Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology, Abeokuta and that of the Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia. According to report, the former governor of Ogun State, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun, had introduced a policy that replaced MAPOLY with Ogun Poly, Ipokia and created MAUSTECH, which led to controversies and protests by both lecturers and students before completing his tenure. However, Governor Abiodun has stated that his directive would remain until the committee determined the way forward for the institutions. Abiodun made this known on Sunday through a statement issued in Abeokuta by his Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin. The governor said the development became necessary due to the fact that the state-owned MAPOLY had been in comatose since MAUSTECH and Ogun State Polytechnic were created. ‘As a responsible government, we cannot fold our arms and allow the situation to continue. We cherish human capital development…’”

There appears to be so much mess for Abiodun to clear. The pictures of the derelict state of Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) that I saw a few weeks ago made me to break down in tears. I had read in the papers that the former governor was attempting to build a 250-bed specialist hospital and that work was already in progress just before May 29. I never believed the story because I knew the state hospital in Ijaiye, right at the heart of the state capital, Abeokuta, was in shambles. Little did I know that the state’s university teaching hospital in Sagamu was itself in ruins. Most of the Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in the state, which are closer to the masses, are empty of medical facilities. It is good to read in the papers the new governor will focus on reviving the PHCs.

One should not even mention here for lack of space the daily harrowing experiences of residents of Igbesa, Atan-Agbara, where the former governor  claimed to generate N7 billion (???) Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) monthly yet the roads have been in tatters for years nor our agonies at Ishasi-Akute due to abandoned projects of the ex-governor! I pity Dapo Abiodun. One can only pray for God to grant him the grace to do his best, as the challenges are so enormous. But so far, he’s on the right track and we hope the interest of the downtrodden will continue to be uppermost on his mind throughout his term in office.

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has inaugurated the Chieftain Review Committee constituted to look into the upgrade and appointments of 75 coronet Obas by former Governor Ibikunle Amosun in the twilight of his administration.

The committee is chaired by the Olu of Ilaro and Paramount ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle.

Other members of the committee are the Osile of Oke Ona Egba, Oba Adedapo Tejuoso; Dagburewe of Idowa, Oba Yinusa Adekoya; Elepe of Epe,  Sagamu Oba Adewale Osiberu; Aro of Egbaland Chief Yinka Kufile, a former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and   Chieftaincy Affairs Mr. Babatunde Oyeti and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Lanre Osota.

The governor, who spoke at the inauguration of the committee at his Oke-Mosan Governor’s Office, Abeokuta, said his government places a very high premium on traditional institution and acknowledged the invaluable roles and contributions it plays in promoting good governance at the grassroots.

He decried the unprecedented approval, appointment and upgrade of some chiefs and Baales to coronet Obas, which generated reactions from the traditional institution and members of the public, adding that the setting up of the committee was to address the alleged anomalies.

“It will be recalled that the last administration approved the appointments and upgrade of some monarchs at the tail end of their administration, notable among these appointments was the upgrade of some baales to coronet Obas, which is unprecedented in the history of our traditional institution in the state.

“The setting up of this committee should not be seen as an exercise to score cheap political points or witch-hunt anyone, but rather should be seen as a token of the seriousness our administration will continue to ascribe to the traditional institution,” he said.

Abiodun, however, added that his administration would ensure that all chieftaincy matters follow due process and the extant laws, while also placing high premium on chieftaincy matters and looking into the welfare of the traditional institutions.

In his response, Oba Olugbenle said the committee would do a thorough job by being fair and just, adding that members would go back to the traditional institution and the people to educate  them that government was not out to score cheap political points or on a revenge mission but to put things in their right perspective.
