Nigeria’s fully integrated telecommunications company, Globacom, will be sponsoring the Onitsha Ofala Festival for another three years.
The company has signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the palace of the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe.
Globacom signed a three-year sponsorship deal with the palace in 2011. At the expiration of the first MOU in 2013, the telecommunications giant renewed the contract for another three years, which ended with the 2016 Ofala festival celebrations.
The renewal of the contract is coming at a time this year’s edition of the popular festival is kicking off with the Umatu Festival where the monarch performed the rites marking the end of the planting and starvation season and the beginning of the period of harvest and plenty for the people of the kingdom. The Obi goes into seclusion immediately after this.
Globacom’s National Sales Coordinator, Southeast, Mr. Mike Ehumadu, signed the MoU on behalf of the company, while the Ogene Onira of Onitsha, Chief (Prof) Ngozi E. Okafor signed on behalf of the Onitsha kingdom.
The Obi expressed satisfaction with Globacom on its sponsorship of the festival in the last seven years, and conveyed his gratitude to the Chairman of Globacom, Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr. for his efforts at promoting the cultural values of the Black Race.
The monarch called on Onitsha people to patronise Globacom, saying that this was one good way to show appreciation for the support the indigenous network had given to Onitsha over the years.
