    Glo-sponsored CNN African  Voices celebrates Nigeria’s bobsled team

    Africa’s first-ever bobsled team, made up of three Nigerian female athletes, will this week grace the studios of CNN International’s popular magazine programme, African Voices sponsored by telecommunications giant, Globacom.

    The inspiring team comprises Akuoma Omeoga, Seun Adigun and Ngozi Onwumere who are scheduled to represent Africa in the sport for the first time at the 2018 Winter Olympics holding from February 9 to 25 in South Korea.

    Globacom disclosed that the trio will feature alongside two other athletes from Ghana and Uganda whom CNN described as “conquering sports that are rarely found on the continent”.

    Though his roots are in Surulere, Lagos, Seun Adigun was raised in Chicago, United States, and was a track and field athlete before she developed a passion for bobsled. A rookie brakewoman in the USA Women’s Bobsled team who, in 2016,  pioneered  what has become the first-ever African Bobsled Team with Nigeria, Adigun coordinates the Nigerian Bobsled team.

    The two other team members, Omeoga and Onwumere, are brakewomen for the team. A former collegiate Track and Field athlete for the University of Minnesota, USA, Omeoga is from Umuahia, Abia State,  while Onwumere, who is from Umuchima, Imo State, represented Nigeria in Track & Field in the 2015 All African games held in the Republic of the Congo.

    Also featuring on the programme is Ghanaian sprinter, Akwasi Frimpong, who has been described by CNN as a “former sprinter making both history and his Olympic dreams come true as the country’s first-ever skeleton slider”.

    Similarly, Brolin Mawejje, a “snowboarder from Uganda whose love of the slopes comes not just from a desire to compete, but to also change lives through the sport,” will equally be featured on the programme.

     African Voices comes on air on CNN at 11.30 a.m. on Friday while the repeat editions come up at 7 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. on Saturday and at 12.30 a.m., 4.30 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Sunday. Further repeats will also run at 5 a.m. on Monday and at 10.30 a.m. on Tuesday.

    Glo: we’ve not acquired 9moble

    Telecommunications giant, Globacom, has denied  reports branding it the  preferred bidder to acquire telecommunications company, 9mobile.

    The company,,in a statement in Lagos  yesterday, said it  ”has not acquired 9Mobile as widely reported in the media.”

    It added: ”We are bound by the terms of the acquisition process as stipulated by the authorities handling it and we will not in any way sway or deviate from the rules.

    “We repose confidence in Barclays Africa, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) which are handling the process that will lead to the emergence of a new owner for the company.”

    Globacom urged all stakeholders and, indeed, the Nigerian public to disregard the reports.

    9mobile biggest losers as Internet users hit 94.8 million in November – NCC

    The internet users increased marginally to 94 .8 million in November, the Nigerian Communications Commission ( NCC ), has said.

    The NCC made this disclosure in its Monthly Internet Subscribers Data for November 2017 on its website on Tuesday in Abuja.

    According to the data, Airtel, MTN and Glo gained more internet subscribers during the month, while 9mobile was the big loser.

    The data also showed that overall, internet users increased by to 94, 818,553 in November from 93,887,184 in October showing an increase of 931, 369.

    The data breakdown revealed that MTN gained 428, 596 new internet users increasing its subscription in November to 33,426,931 from 32,998,335 in October.

    It showed that 9mobile lost 180, 044 internet users in November decreasing its subscription to 11,407.180 as against October when it recorded 11,587,224 in October.

    It said Airtel gained the most with 632, 506 new internet users in November amounting to 23, 074,163 users as against 22,441,657 users in October.

    The data showed that Globacom also gained 50,311new users in November as the figure recorded was 26,910,279 as against 26,859,968 it had in October.

    Glo, Airtel, three others bid to take over 9mobile

    Five firms are bidding to acquire troubled telecom firm 9Mobile (formerly Etisalat), The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) said yesterday.

    It was learnt that the five were picked as qualified among the 16 that Expressed Interestto Barclays bank, the financial advisers on the bid.

    NCC Executive Vice Chairman Prof. Umar Danbatta said yesterday the five successful bidders had been “allowed access to the data room of 9mobile in order for them to assess the financial situation of the company and subsequently make bids for the takeover under a regulated manner.”

    He added: “The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the NCC are supervising what is going on through the Interim Board that was jointly appointed by both of them. We are going to look into the financial standings of the potential bidders as well as their technical capacity.

    “In the final analysis we would like to see 9mobile taken over by a bidder who has the financial as well as technical capacity to fulfill all the requirements of the telecos to provide quality services to the country.”

    Although Danbata did not give the names of the five firms, sources listed them as Airtel, Globacom, Smile, Helvis and Telelogy Holdings are the companies.

    Danbatta, who spoke after declaring open the 82nd Edition of Telecom Consumer Parliament (TCP) at the Shehu Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, also announced that Value Added Service sector of the telecommunication industry is worth over N30 billion.

    The EVC thumbed up the exponential growth of Value Added Service sector, saying while it had provided job opportunities for Nigerians within the past few years, the sector had also helped to improve the wellbeing of Nigerians through its products and services.

    “This VAS service providers normally leverage the networks to services on issues that are for the wel being of Nigerians, such as information on employment, information on which market to patronise in order to get the best deals when you went to buy goods.

    The NCC boss also said the patronage of the various platforms opened by the NCC to check unsolicited messages/calls from service providers and protect the interests of consumers had grown beyond expectations as over 10 million Nigerians have activated the platforms.

    Subscribers on the network of Globacom are in for excess data season as the company once again blazed the trail by  launching a new Data Revolution, which confers on its subscribers, unmatched data packages; the biggest ever in the industry.

    The launch of the Glo Data Revolution was done alongside the unveiling of  an exclusive partnership with iflix, the world’s leading entertainment services for emerging markets, which gives the teeming subscribers of the telecoms firm, 60 days of unlimited access to the world’s best television programmes, series, movies, cartoons and more on their devices.

    Speaking at the launch of the offer at the Mike Adenuga Towers in Lagos, its Regional Director, Planning and Technical, Mr. Sanjib Roy said the new offer gives both new and existing subscribers who renew their subscriptions before the expiration up to 4GB of data for just N1,000. This 4GB data, for example, translates to about 4,000 pages of web browsing.

    In the same vein, the 12.5GB is given for a N2,500 data bundle. This, for instance, could be used for 250 hours of content broadcast.  Just as subscribers stand to gain 24GB for N4,000 and a massive 30GB for N5,000.  The 30GB for N5,000 can enable the subscriber to enjoy videos for over 600 hours, for instance.

    The Globacom top official added that for small plans, new subscribers and those who renew with N100 subscription will have a 90MB bundle; while for N200, they will get 250MB with which they can send 400 emails for example.   For N500, the customer gets a whopping 2GB of data, which the subscribers can use to do 10 days of unlimited chatting, if need be, Roy explained.

    According to him, the new bundle offers are unprecedented and the biggest thing in Nigeria’s telecom history, adding that “never has the subscriber to any network in Nigeria had it so big and so good. All you need to do is get on the Glo data network and stay on by continuing to renew your subscription to enjoy the benefits that give you the unfair advantage over other data users”.

     

     

    Explaining the Glo-iflix partnership, which is available on the Glo Café platform, Roy said that beyond giving subscribers of the telecoms firm, 60 days of unlimited access to the world’s best television programmes, series, movies, cartoons and more on their devices, after the 60 days, the Glo subscribers will get access at a specially discounted price of N100 per month only.  Subscribers need to send “Buzz” to 105 to access the iflix service.

    iflix, he reiterated, offers subscribers the most extensive selection of iconic, critically-acclaimed TV series and fan-favourite films both internationally and locally available in the region, including hit titles such as The Big Bang Theory, Suits, The flash, Arrow, Hercules, Mission Impossible,  as well as highly anticipated Bollywood hits ABCD, Chennai Express, Phantom, and PK. On the local front, iflix offers such Nollywood titles as Head Gone, Jenifa’s Diary, The visit, Bukas and Joints and much more.

    In addition to the above, the company also offers to subscribers who recharge up to N500 and above free YouTube streaming from 1am to 5.30am.  Youtube is a popular video-sharing site that allows users to upload, view, rate, share, add to favorites, report and comment on videos.  All the subscriber needs to do is to dial *777# to buy a data plan to activate the services.

    Their joy was uncontainable; their surprise profound as  the first set of winners including the winner of a brand new Hyundai Accent, in Globacom’s Everyday Bonanza,  went home with their prizes.

    The reward scheme was launched last month with the promise of specified prizes each day of the week to subscribers who recharge with a minimum of N100.  The prizes included the Hyundai car to be won every Sunday.

    After the first set of draws conducted for customers who met the daily minimum recharge qualification criteria between October 23 and November 6, over 2500 winners emerged nationwide. The first set of winners in in the Lagos environment were the ones who received their prizes yesterday.

    The star of the day was a 44-year-old indigene of Takum Local Government of Taraba State, Mr. Shishi Tanini, who  received a brand new Hyundai Accent Car.     National telecoms operator, Globacom, yesterday in Lagos said it has added 200 new base transceiver stations (BTS) to boost end users’ experience on the network.

    Its Regional Chief Marketing Officer, Ashok Israni who spoke during the unveiling of two customer-oriented initiatives, Everyday Bonanza and Glo Jumbo SIM (subscriber identity module), said the telco will continue to invest on network expansion across the country, adding that emphasis will be on 4G to redefine customers’ experience in data services.

    Speaking on the products, he said Everyday Bonanza comes with mouth-watering prizes worth hundreds of millions in naira and different prizes including Flat Screen LED TV sets, 4G-LTE phones, generators, refrigerators, microwave ovens and 4G-LTE MiFis which will be won daily as well as a brand new car which will be won by a lucky subscriber every Sunday while the offers last.

    He described Glo Jumbo SIM as the first of its kind in the country, adding that it comes with a whopping N200,000 worth of free airtime which has been pre-loaded on the SIM cards for calls, data and short message service (SMS).

  • Glo Laffta Fest excites Lokoja residents

    IT was a weekend of excitement for Glo subscribers in Lokoja, as the Kogi State edition of Glo Laffta Fest brought together some of the continent’s finest comedians for a spectacular performance.

    Held at the Confluence Stadium, Lokoja, the show paraded top humour merchants from different parts of Africa including Bovi Ugboma, Godwin ‘Gordons’ Komone, Salvador from Uganda, Basketmouth, Bash and Senator.

    It was also attended by a mammoth crowd comprising fun lovers from Lokoja and other neighbouring towns including Okene, Kotonkarfe, Obajana and Kabba alongside top officials of Kogi state Government, serving and retired military officers as well as captains of industries operating in the state.

    The show kicked-off with a delightful performance by Bash whose funny jokes revolved around his growing years. He later handed over the baton to Senator who held the audience spellbound with stage swag and perfect delivery of his jokes.

    Next was the outstanding performance by the Ugandan top comedian, Salvador who is not popular in Kogi State. It was however his funny jokes which the crowd enjoyed thoroughly that endeared him to their hearts and he was roundly applauded for a good stage performance.

    The Garden city of Port Harcourt will host the Glo Laffta Fest for the second time before the train will move to Onitsha, Makurdi and Ajah in the weeks ahead.

    Globacom has unveiled its plans to provide the necessary  backbone and solutions  that will unleash ease of living and doing business to Nigerians in a new digitalised society.

    Delivering a paper in Lagos, Globacom made it clear that the digitalised future is already here.

    In the paper titled: Towards a Digitalised Future and presented on behalf of the company  by Mr. Tega Agofure, Globacom said people were already living in that future; conducting their daily businesses and personal activities through scores of connected devices.

    He said: “There are hundreds of millions of connected objects across the globe  with smart sensors embedded  in cars, microwaves ovens, fuel dispensers, generators and so many other tools and appliances which interact and provide real time data to businesses and individuals.”

    Agofure added that Glo 1 had given a boost to the provision of connectivity services to key sectors of the economy including oil and gas, construction, banking, commerce, manufacturing, education and health.

    The pristine Glo infrastructure is also giving broadband and connectivity to about 30 million users of smart phones devices cards  and other tools of modern living.

    Agofure said the world is already moving beyond the smartphone to smart homes, smart TVs , smart cars , smart fuel tanks, smart fridges, microwaves and other technological marvels.

    “As our level of connectivity increases in Nigeria, Globacom is ready to provide the broadband solutions and backbone on which these connectivity will ride.”

    According to him, Glo1 is an over 10,000km of undersea cable connected to a massive terrestrial fibre network providing national backbone and metro access to many cities and towns in Nigeria, Ghana and Benin Republic.

    Globacom said that this will soon expand into Spain, Morocco, Senegal, Mauritania, Sierra Leone, Liberia ,Togo and Cape Verde.

     

  • Glo’s subscribers get 15% on e-Top Up

    Globacom has offered its existing and prospective customers an unconditional 15 per cent bonus airtime whenever they recharge their lines with  N100 and above  electronically.

    The offer commenced on August 1  and is accessible to customers on all tariff plans who will also continue to enjoy the existing bonuses on their normal plans including G-Bam, Infinito, Free Tomorrow, Glo Bumpa.

    Globacom said in a press statement issued in Lagos that the offer rewards customers devoid of conditions when they recharge their lines electronically through any e-channel such as Banks USSD recharge codes, mobile banking apps, Automated Teller Machines, Glo’s *805# USSD recharge code, Glo Café, Online/web merchants, Point-Of-Sale terminals and direct purchase from Glo retail outlets.

    The company explained that “Bonuses on e-Top Up amounts below N1000 have seven days validity, while bonuses on e-Top Up amounts between N1000 and N1999 have 15 days validity.  Similarly, bonuses on e-Top Up amounts from N2000 and above are valid for 30 days.”

    According to the telecommunications giant, “the subscriber will receive 15 per cent bonus on the value of the airtime purchased.  For example, if you recharge N200, you will receive N200 plus N30 bonus, totalling N230 airtime value. N200 is credited to your main account while N30 is credited to your bonus account”. Customers who wish to check bonus balance are enjoined to dial #122#.
