    Mechanic in court for alleged N200,000 engine fraud

    A 35-year-old mechanic,Adebori Sabitu, was on Thursday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly obtaining N200,000 from a customer to fix his car engine.

    Sabitu, a resident of Igbogbo, Lagos, is standing trial on two count charge for fraud and stealing.

    The prosecutor, ASP. Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court that the accused committed the offences on September 22, 2016 at Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Abule-Egba, Lagos.

    He said that the accused obtained N200, 000 from Mr Adeola Fadairo under the pretences of buying a new car engine to fix his Mitsubishi montero jeep but failed to fix it.

    Ayorinde said that the complainant also gave N18, 000 to the accused for workmanship.

    He added that 15 months after the complainant gave his vehicle to the accused to repair and all efforts to retrieve his money proved unsuccessful.

    According to the Prosecutor, the complainant reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested.

    The offence contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    Section 314 prescribes 15 year jail term for obtaining money under false pretences.

    The accused pleaded innocence of the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum by magistrate Mrs O.J Awope.

    Awope said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidences of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    She adjourned the case until January 29, for mention.

    Three docked for beating up police officer

    Three men,  who allegedly assaulted a police officer,  appeared on Thursday in  an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    The accused – Ahmed Olaiya, 19; Nurudeen Alarape, 25; and Sodiq Adesina- all residents of  Akute in Ogun, are facing a two-count charge of assault and conspiracy.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Eruada, told court that the accused committed the offences on November 30 at Olowora Junction, Isheri Road,  Lagos.

    Eruada said the accused beat up one Insp  Sunday Adu  who tried to arrest them for a traffic offence.

    “The accused and his accomplices  descended on him and beat him to a pulp,’’ he said.

    The prosecutor  said the offences contravened Sections 172 and 411 of the Criminal Laws  of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    Section 172 prescribes a three-year jail term for assault, while Section 411 provides two years for conspiracy.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Magistrate, Mrs G.O. Anifowoshe, granted the accused  bail in the sum of  N 20,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Anifowoshe said the sureties should be gainfully employed and should show evidence of  two years  tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    He adjourned the case till  January 17, 2018 for mention.

    Man bags six months for stealing car battery

    A 26-year-old unemployed, Alex Godwin, is to spend the next six months in prison for stealing a car battery, an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, has ruled.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O.J. Awope, pronounced the verdict after the accused pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing on Thursday.

    Awope, who sentenced Godwin without an option of fine, said the convict should serve the sentence with hard labour.

    “You are hereby sentenced to six months imprisonment with hard labour and without an option of fine.

    “The sentence would serve as a deterrent to others who might want to engage in similar acts,” she said.

    Godwin, a resident of Alagbado in Ogun, had at his arraignment on December 4 pleaded guilty to the offence and was remanded in prison.

    When the case was called up for fact and sentence, he still admitted guilt but pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing him.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on November 27 at Iju Road, Agege, Lagos.

    He said that the accused stole a motor battery whose value and owner yet unknown.

    “The accused was caught with the battery by security guards on the street.

    “When he was questioned, he confessed that he removed the battery inside a commercial bus parked along the road,” he said.

    The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    Bus conductor bites off passenger’s lip

    A 25-year-old conductor, Tobi Ogunremi, who allegedly bit off a passenger’s lip and punched him on his face, was on Wednesday docked at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Ogunremi, who resides at No. 5, Idi-Orogbo St., Rabinyan, Ijoko, Lagos is facing a one-count charge of assault.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, told court that the accused committed the offences on Dec.7 at Shyllon Junction, Ilupeju , a Lagos Suburb.
    Eruada said the accused physically assaulted Olowoye Adedayo, after he refused to give him his balance money and later threw it on the ground.

    “Adedayo sustained a mouth injury following the bite, as well as several punches he received from Ogunremi during an argument,” he told the court.

    Eruada said the offence contravened Section 172 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Magistrate, Mrs G.O. Anifowoshe, granted him bail in the sum of N20, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Anifowoshe adjourned the case until Jan. 17, 2018 for mention.

    Woman bites Ikeja Electric workers over power disconnection

    A 28-year-old trader, Kemi Shopade, who allegedly assaulted two Ikeja Electric workers that wanted to disconnect her electricity wire, on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Shopade, resident of Alaguntan, Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy and assault.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Awase, said that the accused committed the offences on November 24, at her residence.

    Awase said that the accused and two others, who had yet to be apprehended, assaulted two workers of Ikeja Electric — Mr John Oluwole and Mr Uwaoman Ibiam.

    “The accused beat up and bit the complainants while performing their duty,” he said.

    He said that the complainants disconnected the electricity supply of the accused over unpaid electricity bills from January.

    “The accused, who had not paid for electricity since the beginning of the year, descended on the complainants when they disconnected her power supply.

    “The two other men who are still at large joined her in beating the complainants, and in the process, the accused bit the complainants.

    “The case was reported to the police and the accused was arrested,” the prosecutor said.

    The offences contravened Sections 174 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

    Section 174 prescribes three years jail term for a person guilty of assault.

    The accused, however, pleaded innocence of the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N20,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    The Magistrate, Mr J.A. Adigun, said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    He adjourned the case until January 5 for mention.

  • Man arraigned for stealing N1.2m generator brain box

    Man arraigned for stealing N1.2m generator brain box

    A 25-year-old generator repairer, Emeka Okoli, who allegedly entered into a bank and stole a generator brain box valued at N1.2million, was on Monday in Lagos released on a N200,000 bail.

    Okoli, of no fixed address, entered a `not-guilty’ plea to the two-count charge of intent to commit felony and stealing.

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court which gave the ruling, also asked the accused to produce two sureties as part of the bail conditions.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O.J Awope, said the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    According to the prosecutor, Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, the accused committed the offences on May 29 at Ilupeju, Lagos.

    He said that the accused unlawfully entered the First Bank premises at night and stole a giant generator’s brain box valued at N1.2million, property of First Bank Plc.

    “The accused jumped into the bank and went to the generator post, he came with sophisticated instruments to disconnect the brain box.

    “The two security guards on duty heard sound from the generator stand and they decided to check what was happening.

    “Immediately the accused sighted them coming towards him, he dropped the brain box and jumped the fence to escape.

    “The guards gave him a hot chase and he was apprehended and handed over to the police.

    “The brain box was recovered,” he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 308(2) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 308(2) prescribes a seven-year jail term for convicted offenders.

    The case was adjourned until June 19, for mention.

    Brothers arraigned for conspiracy, threat to uncle’s life

    Two brothers, Ekeh Chinedu and Ekeh Uzoma, who allegedly conspired and threatened to kill their uncle, were on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    The accused, Chinedu, 31, a youth corps member in Ogun and Uzoma, 27, a university graduate, resides at 5th Avenue, Block 2, Flat 4, Festac Town, Lagos.

    The accused are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, threat to life and breach of peace, to which they pleaded not guilty.

    Police prosecutor Peter Nwangwu alleged that the accused conspired and threatened the life of the complainant, Ekeh John, who is also their uncle.

    Nwangwu said the offences were committed on Feb. 17 at about 1.30 p.m. at the residence of the accused.

    He told the court that the complainant reported the case against the accused, who had been threatening his life.

    Nwangwu said that the complainant, who recently returned to Nigeria after 30 years abroad, demanded that the accused and his family vacate the flat they occupied, which belonged to him.

    The prosecutor alleged that the complainant had earlier given the flat to his younger brother to stay temporarily, when he had some financial and accommodation problems.

    He said that on the uncle’s return, he asked the accused to pack out, while presenting them with the original documents of the house.

    Nwangwu said this led to serious altercations between the complainant and the two accused, who then resorted to threatening to kill the former, claiming that they were cultists.

    The prosecutor alleged that the accused kept calling the complainant with strange numbers on phone, threatening to deal with him and kill him.

    He said the offences contravened Sections 56, 166 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 56 provides for 14 years imprisonment for threat to life, while Section 409 stipulates two years.

    The Chief Magistrate, Y.O. Aje-Afunwa, granted the accused N100,000 bail each and two sureties each in like sum.

    Aje-Afunwa said the sureties, who should be gainfully employed, should also show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government, as part of the bail condition.

    The case was adjourned to June 21, for mention.

    Man docked for stealing meat in Lagos market

    A 31-year-old man, Nurudeen Raimi, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly stealing meat worth N67,000 in a Lagos market.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, said that the accused, whose occupation was not stated, committed the offence sometime in May 2010 in Agege, Lagos. He alleged that Raimi, a resident of Iyana Igbenimi Street, Bariga, Lagos, stole the cow meat belonging to one Mr Ibrahim Danbaba. Okuoimose said the accused approached Danbaba to buy meat, and during the bargaining, Danbaba excused himself to urinate.

    The prosecutor said that while Danbaba was away, the accused bolted with the meat without paying. He said that the complainant did not see the accused in the market until 2017, when he got him arrested. Okuoimose said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes three years jail term for a person convicted of stealing. The accused pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum. The Magistrate, Mrs Y.O. Ekogbule adjourned the case until June 5.

  • Driver docked for alleged N1.3m fraud

    A commercial driver, Justine Okoro, who allegedly defrauded a businessman, Tochukwu Mamara, of N1.3 million, on Friday appeared in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused, 45, who resides at No. 538, Abesan Estate, Ipaja, a Lagos suburb, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, fraud and stealing.

    Police Prosecutor Peter Nwangwu told the court that the accused committed the offences with others still at large at about 10.a.m. on April 4 at Alaba International Market, Ojo Lagos.

    He alleged that the accused fraudulently collected the money from the complainant by luring him to an unknown destination.

    “The accused approached the complainant, who sells Motorola walkie-talkie, to supply walkie-talkie to him in large quantities.

    “Mamara took three samples of the products to him at an agreed location, but on getting there, Okoro hypnotized the complainant.

    “The accused and others forced the complainant to swear to an oath of secrecy that whatever he saw would not be revealed.

    “The accused asked the complainant to go and withdraw money from his account in exchange for dollars,” Nwangwu said.

    Nwangwu also told the court that the accused collected N1.3 million from the complainant and promised to send double the amount to him in hard currency.

    “The complainant later discovered that he had been duped.”

    The offences contravened Sections 285, 312 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 312 prescribes a 15-year jail term for offenders, while Section 285 stipulates a three-year imprisonment.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Y.O. Aje-Afunwa, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    She said the sureties must show evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government and adjourned the case until June 21 for hearing. 

  • Boy docked for alleged stealing

    An 18-year-old, Victor Udekwu, was arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Tuesday for allegedly stealing some electronics and other items.

    Udekwu, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and conspiracy.

    The stolen items were valued at N51, 000.

    He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Yomi Egunjobi, told court that the accused and two others now at large, committed the offences on April 24 at Beriberi Market Street in Agege, near Lagos.

    “The accused entered the apartment of Saliu Salami and stole a set of home theatres with slippers, valued at N51, 000.

    “The accused was caught in the act by the complainant’s neighbour and was apprehended immediately.

    Egunjobi said that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 prescribes a three-year jail term for anyone convicted of stealing, while Section 409 stipulates two years for conspiracy.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. M.O. Osinbanjo, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    She said the surety must be gainfully employed and should also show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Osinbanjo adjourned the case until May 29 for mention.
