  • Three arraigned for theft of company’s diesel

    Three men, who allegedly stole 150 litres of company diesel worth N30, 000, were on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Israel Umoh, 27; David Dashagh, 22; and Umoru Musa, 22; whose addresses were not provided, are facing a two-count charge of stealing and conspiracy.

    They pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, told the court that the accused committed the offences at Oregun Freight Company Limited, Ikeja, Lagos, on April 16.

    He said that the accused, who were workers at the Freight Company Limited, conspired to steal the diesel.

    The offences contravene Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 prescribes a three-year jail term for one convicted of stealing, while Section 409 stipulates two years for conspiracy.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. G.O. Anifowoshe, admitted the accused to N20, 000 bail, with two sureties in like sum.

    She said the sureties must be blood relations of the accused, gainfully employed, and should show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Anifowoshe adjourned the case until May 25 for mention.

     

  • Woman arraigned for biting off friend’s ear, granted bail

    A 22-year-old unemployed woman, Tope Olanrewaju, who allegedly assaulted her friend by biting off her left ear, was on Friday granted N100, 000 bails by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi, who gave the ruling, also granted the accused one surety in like sum, who must be gainfully employed.

    The accused, a resident of No. 4, Agbowa St., Ogijo near Ikorodu, Lagos State, had pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of assault occasioning grievous harm and unlawfully inflicting wounds brought against her.

    According to Police Prosecutor Simeon Imhonwa, the accused committed the offences on May 7 at about 4.00.p.m. at Toyin Street, Ikeja.

    Imhonwa alleged that the accused beat the complainant, Tolulope Adekoya, to a pulp and cut off her left ear with her teeth.

    “The complainant said Tope Olanrewaju had threatened to deal with her on several occasions.

    “The complainant alleged that the accused refused to return the money she borrowed and kept threatening her life whenever she demands her money.

    “This led to a misunderstanding and a fight between them, and in the process, the accused beat Adekoya to a pulp and bit off the left ear,” he told the court.

    The offences contravened Sections 171 and 244 (a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The magistrate adjourned the case until July 1 for mention.

     

  • Civil servant arraigned for N25, 000 theft

    A 46-year-old civil servant, Sunkanmi Akinfenwa, who allegedly stole N25, 000 cash, was on Thursday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Akinfenwa, a resident of Market Street, in Agege area of Lagos, is facing a charge of stealing.

    He, however, entered a not guilty plea.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, told the court that the accused committed the offence on April 21, at Market Street, Agege, and Lagos.

    Eruada said that the accused came to the shop of the complainant, Mr Abdulsalam Adamu, acting as if he wanted to buy Indomie.

    “But in the process of being given the item, he stole the sum of N25, 000 kept in the carton.

    “When Adamu discovered that his money had disappeared, he saw the accused running away, but he shouted for help and the accused was immediately apprehended by passers-by,” he said.

    The offence, the prosecutor said, contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section stipulates a three-year jail term for offenders.

    The Magistrate, Mrs G. O. Anifowoshe, granted the accused bail in the sum of N25, 000, with two sureties in like sum.

    She said the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Anifowoshe adjourned the case till May 24 for mention.

  • Travel agent charged with N486,000 visa fraud

    A 47-year-old travel agent, Yahaya Emmanuel, who allegedly defrauded three men of N486,000 on the pretext of procuring Finland visas for them, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Emmanuel, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and fraud.

    He, however, entered a `not guilty’ plea.

    But the Prosecutor, Sgt. Babaji Ishaku, told the court that the accused committed the offences sometime between November 2016 and February 2017 at Area 1 Estate,  Alagbado, Lagos.

    According to him, the accused collected N250,000 from Messers Stephen Adeyemi,  N110,000 from Ogunleye Dare and N126,000 from Ameh David with a promise to procure Finland visas for them.

    “The accused collected the money and failed to get the visas as promised; instead he converted the money to personal use.”

    The offences contravened Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 provides 14 years imprisonment for offenders, while Section 314 stipulates 15 years for obtaining credit by false pretences.

    The Magistrate, Mr J. A. Adegun, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    He said the sureties must be gainfully employed and should also show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case was adjourned until May 15 for mention.

     

  • Man arraigned for assaulting policeman

    A 32-year-old man, Saheed Alowonle, who allegedly assaulted and willfully destroyed the reflective jacket of a police officer while on duty, on Monday appeared in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Alowonle, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of assault and malicious damage.

    The accused, according to the prosecutor, Sgt. Babaji Ishaku, committed the offences on April 7 at Aguda, Ogba, opposite Excellence Hotel.

    He said the accused assaulted Sgt. Omege Folusayo, who was performing his lawful duty by holding his jacket.‎‎

    “The accused destroyed the officer’s reflective jacket in the process.”‎‎

    Alowonle denied the charges.

    The offences contravened Sections 172 and 348 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 172 stipulates three years for serious assault, while Section 348 provides two years for offenders.‎

    In his ruling, the magistrate, Mr J.A. Adegun, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Adegun said the sureties must be blood relations of the accused and should also provide evidence of tax payment to the state government.

    The court adjourned the case until May 22 for mention.

     

  • Applicant in court over illegal possession of cannabis

    A 22-year-old applicant, Shilo Mohammed, was on Thursday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly being in possession of a bag containing cannabis sativa (a.k.a. Indian hemp).

    The defendant is facing a count charge of unlawful possession of cannabis sativa.

    Mohammed of no fixed address, however, denied committing the offence, while Magistrate M.I. Dan-Oru admitted him to bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    The case was adjourned until May 25 for mention.
    According to the prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, the accused committed the offence on April 24 at Gowon Estate, Egbeda, Lagos.

    He said that the accused was caught by policemen on patrol in an uncompleted building.

    “The accused sighted the police on patrol, he took to his heels, the police suspected something and they chased him and he was apprehended.

    “When his bag was searched, weeds suspected to be hemp were found,” he said.

    The offence contravened Section 330 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused risked six months imprisonment if found guilty of being in possession of the weed, according to the provisions of Section 330.

     

  •  Man bolts with shopper’s motorcycle in Lagos

    A 23-year-old man, Anthony Ayo, who allegedly stole the motorcycle of a man, who had stopped over for shopping at a supermarket, on Thursday appeared in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Ayo, whose address was not provided, pleaded not guilty to a charge of theft.

    But the Prosecutor, Sgt. Yomi Egunjobi, told the court that the accused committed the offence on March 30 at Area 1 Estate, Alagbado, a Lagos suburb.

    Egunjobi said the complainant, Mr Fedrick Osese, parked his motorcycle along the road to buy some items at a supermarket and came out to discover that the motorcycle had disappeared.

    “He saw the accused taking the motorcycle away and he shouted for help and the accused was apprehended immediately by passers-by.”

    The offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The section stipulates a three-year jail term for offenders.

    The Magistrate, Mrs M.O. Osibanjo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    Osibanjo adjourned the case until May 15 for mention

     

     

  • Saleswoman faces N3.7m theft charge

    For allegedly stealing N 3.7 million from her employer, a 28-year-old saleswoman Feyikemi Olatunji , was on Wednesday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Olatunji , a resident of Agege area of Lagos, pleaded not guilty to the charge of stealing preferred against her.

    The accused, according to the prosecutor, Sgt. Mike Unah, committed the offence between year 2016 and March 17, 2017, at 1, Sharwama Outlet, situated at Ogba area of Lagos.

    Unah alleged that the accused, who works as a saleswoman at 01 Sharwama Outlet, stole N3.7 million from her employer, Ebunoluwa Adeyemi.

    He said that the accused was in charge of depositing the money made from sales at the bank.

    The prosecutor said that the accused, instead of depositing the whole money made from sales in the company’s account, deposited half of it into her own personal account.

    “When Adeyemi eventually discovered that the accused was stealing from her, she decided to confront Olatunji, who denied stealing any money from her.

    “Adeyemi reported the matter to the police and the accused was arrested for further questioning,” Unah said.

    He noted that the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    Two security guards docked for stealing employer’s N3.5m bus

    Two security guards, Mohammed Alli and Cletus Imuzogbe, who allegedly stole their employer’s bus valued at N3.5million, were on Tuesday charged before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Alli, 38, and Imuzogbe, 68, are facing a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, said that the accused committed the offences with some others still at large on April 9, at College Road, Ifako-Ijaiye, Agege, and Lagos.

    He said the accused stole the bus with Registration No. AKD 468X4, property of F.M Best Bargain Ltd. Supermarket.

    According to Ayorinde, the accused unlawfully damaged burglar proof to gain entrance into where the bus was parked.

    “They were, however, apprehended by the police after the complainant reported the matter,’’ he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 287, 308 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused may be jailed for three years if found guilty, according to the provisions of Section 287.

    Both accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O. Awope, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

    Awope adjourned the case till May 5 for mention

  • Electricity company staff charged with forgery, N1.4m theft

    A 29-year-old employee of  Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC),  Gbemisola Olaleye, who allegedly stole his employer’s N1.4 million and also forged some documents, was on Tuesday released on a N500,000 bail.

    The woman, whose address was not provided, was released on bail after she entered a `not-guilty’ plea to the two-count charge of stealing and forgery.

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court who gave the ruling, also asked the accused to produce two sureties as part of the bail condition.

    According to the prosecutor, Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, the accused committed the offences between September 2016 and March 2017 at an IKEDC office in Ikeja.

    “The accused stole the N1.4 million which was paid to her by electricity consumers.”

    Ayorinde told the court that the accused also forged payment receipts of the company which she issued to members of the public.

    The offences contravened Sections 285 and 363 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
