Mohbad: Aloba family conducts fresh autopsy

The family of the late singer Mohbad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, has undertaken a new toxicology tes to uncover the cause of his death.

Mohbad died on September 12, last year, and was buried the following day.

In response to public outcry, Mohbad’s body was exhumed on September 21 for an autopsy. However, in May, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Wahab Shittu said the pathologist responsible for the initial autopsy informed the coroner that the body had decomposed so much that to determine the cause of death was difficult.

Dissatisfied, the Aloba family recently called for an independent post-mortem and toxicology test. On Tuesday, Monisola Odumosu, a member of the Aloba family’s legal team, announced that a two-part autopsy was being conducted on Mohbad.

Odumosu reported that the first phase of the autopsy was completed last week, while the second phase, which includes toxicology and histology tests, was underway. She stated that the procedure was overseen by Joseph Aloba, Mohbad’s father, and a pathologist representing Wunmi, the late singer’s wife.

The family statement read: “The second autopsy, requested by the Aloba family and ordered by the Magistrate of the Coroner Court, Ms. T. A. Shotobi, was conducted on Friday, July 19, and Saturday, July 20. This autopsy is a two-part exercise, with the first part now completed.

“If the cause of death cannot be determined from this initial examination, the second part will proceed, involving a toxicology and histology test on the necessary samples already obtained.

“This comprehensive procedure, conducted last Friday, was witnessed only by Mr. Joseph Aloba, the forensic pathologist appointed by Mr. Joseph Aloba and his team, and legal representatives of both Mr. Joseph Aloba and a pathologist appointed by Wunmi Aloba to observe the procedure.”

Court grants family leave to conduct independent autopsy on Mohbad

The Coroner’s Court sitting in Ikorodu has granted leave to engage independent pathologists and toxicologists to conduct an autopsy on Mr. Ilerioluwa Promise Aloba aka Mohbad by the Aloba Family.

It will be recalled that the family had earlier applied for an independent autopsy citing suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of the deceased on the 12th of September 2023.

The court’s decision comes after the previous autopsy conducted by the government and presented by Prof. Soyemi of the Lagos State Teaching Hospital to the court was declared inconclusive.

The Aloba family’s legal team had rejected the results and pushed for an independent postmortem.

The Coroner’s Court in Ikorodu has authorized the Aloba family to engage independent pathologists and toxicologists to conduct an autopsy on Mr. Ilerioluwa Promise Aloba, also known as Mohbad.

Ir will be recalled that the family had requested an independent autopsy due to suspicious circumstances surrounding his death on September 12, 2023.

The decision followed the government’s initial autopsy, presented by Prof. Soyemi of the Lagos State Teaching Hospital, which was deemed inconclusive by the court.

The Aloba family’s legal team had rejected the initial results and advocated for an independent postmortem.

In a statement issued to The Nation and signed by the head of the Aloba legal team, Monisola Odumosu, the Coroner’s Court chaired by His Honour, T.A Sonubi who gave the order however said that all the legal expenses on the conduct and process of the toxicology test would be borne by the Aloba family.

The court further ordered that the father, mother and the wife of the deceased must be present at the autopsy.

The legal team at a press conference addressed by Wahab Shittu SAN and Taiwo Odumosu Esq. had flatly rejected the autopsy and toxicology test result on behalf of the Aloba Family and urged for an independent toxicology test.

Meanwhile, the application to recall witnesses who had given testimony earlier was not granted but the application to call new witnesses in the matter was granted on the basis that the family would provide further details of the witnesses for a witness summons to be issued by the Court.

Odumosu said Wunmi Aloba (wife of the diseased) also applied that she should be allowed to bury the late singer.

However, in its response, the legal team offered that the late singer’s burial depends on how soon the autopsy and the toxicology test could be conducted.

It stated that the court was amenable to the burial, but required agreement from all parties involved—Mr. Joseph Aloba (the deceased’s father), Mrs. Abosede Olumiyi (the deceased’s mother), and Mrs. Wunmi Aloba (the deceased’s wife).

It added that if they cannot reach an agreement, the dispute should be referred to the High Court for resolution.

Mohbad’s family demands comprehensive investigation after inconclusive test results

The legal representatives of the Aloba family have called for an independent re-examination of the toxicology samples of the late Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Imole Aloba, also known as Mohbad, by a reputable and internationally recognised forensic laboratory.

They emphasised that the re-examination should be conducted with the utmost transparency and adhere to the highest standards of forensic science.

The demand followed the release of inconclusive toxicology test results on Mohbad, which the Aloba family finds unacceptable and insists on a comprehensive investigation.

In a statement signed by the Aloba’s family legal team, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Wahab Shittu and Taiwo Odumosu said: “We, the legal representatives of the Aloba family, express our profound dissatisfaction and disappointment with the recent announcement regarding the toxicology test results of the late Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Imole Aloba, which have been declared ‘inconclusive’ by the pathologist.”

“This outcome is entirely unacceptable to us, and the Aloba family raises serious concerns about the integrity and thoroughness of the investigation by the police and the medical team into the untimely death of their beloved son, brother, and friend. The Aloba family and, indeed, the whole world demand to know where the toxicology test was carried out as this has impugned the integrity.”

The statement further read: “We call for an independent re-examination of the toxicology samples by a reputable and internationally recognized forensic laboratory. This re-examination should be conducted with the utmost transparency and adherence to the highest standards of forensic science.

“Comprehensive Review of Procedures: A thorough review of the procedures and protocols followed during the initial toxicology testing is imperative. This review should include an assessment of the chain of custody, handling, and analysis of the samples to ensure that no procedural lapses or contamination occurred.

“Collaboration with international experts: We urge the involvement of independent international forensic experts to oversee and validate the re-examination process. Their participation will help restore confidence in the findings and ensure that all possible avenues are explored. Full Disclosure: The Aloba Family demands full disclosure of all findings and reports related to the toxicology tests. Transparency is crucial to understanding the cause of death and dispelling any doubts or suspicions”.

“Time is of the essence in this matter. We call upon the relevant authorities to expedite the re-examination process and ensure that the family receives definitive answers without undue delay.

“The Nigeria Police has not done enough in this case. The investigation so far conducted does not show the thoroughness and professionalism expected in a murder case of this nature. We call on the Inspector General of Police to personally intervene in this investigation and bring the perpetrators to book.”

JUST IN: Autopsy reveals possible cause of Mohbad’s death

An autopsy report on late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba popularly known as MohBad has finally been released.

According to the report, the autopsy was conducted at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and samples of Mohbad’s gastric content, blood, bone marrow, liver, kidney and lung were retrieved for a toxicology test.

The anatomical and pathological findings revealed that Mohbad had an injury on his right forearm and his body was exhumed with moderation to severe decomposition.

The autopsy also showed that “no significant gross finding” could be attributed to the singer’s death.

The toxicology report showed a positive finding of Diphenhydramine, an anti-histamine, but the concentration was not in a fatal or lethal range.

The report concludes that there is a possibility of a drug reaction or anaphylactic shock.

The report also noted that the body was not embalmed prior to burial and exhumed eight days after burial, which may have affected the toxicology results.

Anti-histamines are medicines used to treat symptoms of allergies. They are also used to treat a variety of other conditions such as stomach problems, colds, and anxiety, among others.

The report said the cause of death could not be ascertained. It, however, added that there is a possibility of drug reaction in view of any significant post-mortem and toxicology findings.

“It is noteworthy that the body neither had an autopsy nor embalmed prior to interment on the second day,” the report states.

“Following the Order for Exhumation, the body was exhumed on 21/09/2023 (8 days after the burial).

“Autopsy revealed moderate to marked decomposition of organs. Apart from the superficial injury on the right forearm, no significant gross finding could be attributed to death.

“Against this background, samples were taken for toxicology. This is to determine if there was any anaphylactic reaction, substances of abuse, overdosage or common household poisoning.

“Toxicology revealed positive findings of Diphenhydramine, an anti-histamine; however, this concentration was not in a fatal or lethal range. The other analytics were unremarkable.

“In determining fatal anaphylactic shock, blood sample needs to be taken as quickly as possible.

“Unfortunately, this was prevented or made impossible by the burial of the deceased on the second day. In the light of the foregoing, cause of death could not be ascertained.

“However, the possibility of a fatal anaphylactic shock (drug reaction) could be considered in view of the absence of any significant post mortem and toxicology findings.”

DNA test must be conducted on Mohbad’s son before burial – Father

Joseph Aloba, the father of the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has insisted that a DNA test must be conducted on the deceased’s one-year-old son, Liam.

He said that a paternity test must be carried out on his grandson before the singer’s burial.

As reported by The Nation, Mohbad’s body was exhumed for autopsy days after his burial following public outcry for an investigation into his controversial death.

However, the result of the autopsy conducted on the body of the late singer is said to have been unable to ascertain the cause of his death.

Following the failed autopsy, many have been clamouring for his body to be buried.

Speaking in a recent interview with TVC, Aloba vowed not to release his son’s body for burial until a DNA test is conducted on his grandson, Liam, to ascertain his true paternity.

“I have to do the DNA [on Mohbad’s son] before the burial,” he said.

Debunking the allegations that he is wearing Mohbad’s clothes and trying to inherit his property, Aloba said: “When Mohbad was alive, we were friends. If he buys clothes for himself, he will also buy for me.

“Since his death, I have never gone to his house. I have never gone there for anything. But some people misinterpreted things, so whenever they see me with a shirt, they say it is Mohbad’s. Is it compulsory that it must be from my son? I have my own clothes, too.”

  • Autopsy report fails to ascertain cause of late Mohbad’s death

Autopsy report fails to ascertain cause of late Mohbad’s death

Prof. Sunday Soyemi, a Forensic Scientist and Pathologist at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), informed the coroner, Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi, that the autopsy results for the late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, known as Mohbad, failed to determine the cause of death.

Soyemi explained that the inconclusive result is largely due to the significant delay, approximately 21 days before the autopsy was performed, by which time the body had decomposed.

While giving further clarifications on the proceedings, counsel to Mohbad’s family, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Wahab Shittu said: “The pathologist said the body ought to have been exhumed within 12 hours after it was buried to avoid decomposition.

“So the summary he is saying is that the cause of death cannot be ascertained and when you say the cause of death cannot be ascertained, it means it is suspicious, it is not clear, no particular reason.”

The lawyer also said the pathologist referred to certain drugs administered to the late Mohbad before he died which could have caused a reaction that made it difficult to ascertain the cause of death.

Shittu said: “He also went further to say that it may be attributed to reactions to certain drugs administered to him before he died. Again he then qualified that to say he does not know whether it is those drugs that actually led to his death”.

The Coroner has adjourned to June 11th for the cross-examination of the Pathologist.
