Tale of Seyi Tinubu, NANS, and Isa Atiku Abubakar

    By Arabinrin Aderonke

Seyi Tinubu is a young Nigerian who has earned a reputation for his commitment to helping others and empowering the youth. Those who know him will agree that he is a quiet and reserved person, often going out of his way to uplift others while avoiding unnecessary publicity and attention.

Despite being the son of the president, Seyi doesn’t fit the stereotype of someone who might use their position for personal gains. In fact, it is quite the opposite. His focus has always been on meaningful contributions to Nigeria, especially the youth.

Through his work, he has provided scholarships, mentorship, and resources to countless Nigerians, and even recently he donated the sum of 500 million Naira to victims of the Maiduguri flood which ravaged 70 percent of the city and displaced millions of residents.

It’s quite laughable to see some of the things flying around online. The allegations pushed by Comrade Isa Atiku Abubakar, a factional NANS President who never contested for any elective position are not only false but completely out of touch with the character of the person he’s accusing.

They don’t make sense by any standard, and quite frankly, it’s disappointing to watch such desperate attempts at dragging someone who has done nothing but support young people.

Leadership has changed hands at the National Association of Nigerian Students. The election was conclusive. The process was public. Elected officials were sworn in, and the event drew the presence of governors, ministers, and respected personalities.

Nineteen new executives, led by Comrade Olushola Oladoja of the University of Jos, now carry the responsibility of representing millions of Nigerian students across the country.

Shortly after the elections, Isah Atiku posted pictures of his bruised body online and claimed he was attacked. Then he took it further by accusing Seyi Tinubu of plotting to assassinate him. Two days later, he changed the story again, this time saying he was kidnapped, offered a bribe, and beaten when he refused. Seyi Tinubu responded by making it clear he does not know Isah Atiku and has never met him.

What we are seeing looks like a badly planned attempt to tarnish someone’s name. Anyone who knows Seyi understands that he avoids drama. Unfortunately, people sometimes mistake kindness for weakness and try to exploit it for personal gain.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has long been a voice for students in Nigeria, advocating for their rights and working to improve their educational and social conditions. With the election of new executives, NANS now has a role to play in shaping the future of Nigerian students.

However, the leadership process has faced challenges, and it is necessary to address any attempts to undermine it with false claims.

After elections, it is common for those who didn’t win to form their groups and challenge the results. This has become a familiar pattern. But we must ask, could this be another attempt to create chaos or push personal agendas? Are some people willing to take this route just to gain power or influence? Is this what happens when parties form their groups to exploit the system for personal gain?

This issue must be addressed immediately. If we allow these distractions to continue, how can we focus on what truly matters, the future, and the well-being of Nigerian students? The youth are both the present and future of Nigeria.

Despite facing false accusations, Seyi Tinubu was not involved in any violence during the NANS inauguration. The event was peaceful with no disturbances. Let’s stay focused on the best interests of Nigerian students. Isah Atiku must stop spreading these fabricated lies.

Seyi Tinubu has made his position known. He is not involved, and he will not be dragged into a matter that does not concern him. Truthfully, the public can see through the performance.

It is time to focus on what matters. The baton has passed. Let the new leaders serve.

City Boy Movement: Seyi Tinubu not involved in disrupting NANS activities

The City Boy Movement has refuted claims that its grand patron, Seyi Tinubu, was involved in disrupting the activities of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

Responding to allegations made by a factional NANS president, Atiku Isah, the group’s director general, Francis Shoga, dismissed the accusations as malicious and unfounded, describing them as an attempt at character assassination without credible evidence.

In a statement issued in Lagos over the weekend, Shoga reaffirmed Tinubu’s commitment to youth empowerment, constructive dialogue, and impactful development, stressing that he does not interfere in student organisations’ internal affairs.

The City Boy Movement, a youth-driven sociopolitical advocacy group, warned against defamatory campaigns and indicated possible legal action against those spreading false claims.

“The City Boy Movement is aware of false claims that our Grand Patron, Seyi Tinubu, mobilised thugs to disrupt unauthorised NANS inauguration events.

“As the Director General of the City Boy Movement, I categorically reject these baseless fabrications designed to tarnish the impeccable character of Barr. Seyi.

“The allegations are a desperate attempt at character assassination without a shred of evidence.

“Atiku’s melodramatic claims of being ‘stripped naked’ and forced to make videos under duress are nothing but a theatrical performance that cannot fly or garner undeserved public sympathy. This is the 21st century.”

He emphasised that Tinubu, who is consistently focused on youth advancement, has zero tolerance for organisational interference.

“Barr. Seyi Tinubu’s calm demeanour and principled approach to youth engagement are well-established.

“His commitment has always revolved around constructive dialogue, youth empowerment, and impactful development programs– not interference in organisational affairs.”

The group will not remain silent while opportunists exploit the President’s son’s name for publicity,” he added.

Shoga encouraged Nigerian youth to ignore the theatrics and stay focused on meaningful progress and collaboration.

Shoga further warned those behind the allegations to be prepared for litigation if they do not desist.

“However, we want those orchestrating this smear campaign, including Atiku and his cohorts, to be prepared to face legal consequences for their defamatory actions.

“The City Boy Movement will not stand idly by while opportunists attempt to use Barr. Seyi’s name for cheap publicity.”

NANS: Youth group warns against politicising Seyi Tinubu’s name

A non-governmental group, The City Boy Movement, has condemned what it called a malicious and baseless report by an online newspaper, alleging that Seyi Tinubu sponsored thugs to disrupt the so-called inauguration of an unauthorised faction of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) led by Isa Atiku Abubakar.

Francis Tosin Shoga, the Director General of the City Boy Movement, in a statement during the weekend, dismissed the allegations as baseless and a clear attempt to smear the character of Seyi Tinubu.

The youth-led sociopolitical and good governance advocacy group asserted it would not stand by while its grand patron, Seyi Tinubu, is dragged into political controversies in which he has no involvement.

Shoga said in the statement, “As the Director General of the City Boy Movement, I categorically reject these baseless fabrications designed to tarnish the impeccable character of Barr. Seyi Tinubu.

“The allegations are desperate attempts at character assassination without a shred of evidence.

“Atiku’s melodramatic claims of being ‘stripped naked’ and ‘forced to make videos under duress’ are nothing but a theatrical performance that cannot fly or garner undeserved public sympathy. This is the 21st century”.

The group emphasised Seyi Tinubu’s calm demeanour and principled approach to youth engagement, stating, “He has consistently championed constructive dialogue, youth empowerment, and impactful development initiatives—not meddling in organisational affairs.”

However, in a firm rebuttal, it warned the masterminds of the smear campaign and urged Nigerian youths not to be pawns in the hands of anti-state elements.

“We want those orchestrating this smear campaign, including Atiku and his cohorts, to be prepared to face legal consequences for their defamatory actions.

“The City Boy Movement will not stand idly by while opportunists attempt to use Barr. Seyi Tinubu’s name is for cheap publicity.

“We encourage all Nigerian youth to disregard these attention-seeking theatrics and remain focused on constructive engagement that advances our collective progress.

“Atiku’s uncoordinated skit-making activities will not fly, regardless of whoever might be supporting his misguided endeavours,” Shoga added.

APC chieftain Lawuru slams NANS factional President over Seyi Tinubu

APC chieftain and National Leader of Southern Youth Movement (SYM) High Chief Promise Lawuru (aka Ozigizaga) has described the recent allegation by the factional President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Comrade Atiku Abubakar Isah, against Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, as fabricated lies and campaign of calumny to discredit the Federal Government.

The factional NANS President had accused Seyi Tinubu of bribery, torture, abduction and attempting to disrupt the inauguration of NANS leadership in Abuja.

He also accused him of dispersing the crowd with thugs and locking up the inauguration venue.

Lawuru, while addressing newsmen in Warri, described the allegations as baseless and unfounded.

He wondered how Isah arrived at the conclusion that the son of the President had a hand in his abduction and dimissed allegation that Seyi offered N100 million to him to support his father in an election that is still two years away, by which time Isah will not be in office ‘assuming he was even the authentic NANS president’.

He said: “First I will respond as the National Leader of the Southern Youth Movement. In addition, I will respond, for the fact that ;  Seyi been accused is somebody that I can vouch for.

“I am not just speaking for the fact that I am the National President of Southern Youth Movement, but the the character been accused is someone I know what he could do at any particular time.

“I strongly criticise that accusation leveled against a distinguished youth personality. You know that this is the first time Nigerians are seeing the son of a President coming out to mingle with the youths.

“We have had previous presidents with their families; but non of them came closer to the society, like Seyi Tinubu who is trying to ensure all things works for the betterment of Nigerian youths.

“But today, you can see how they are dragging him here and there. if it’s not this allegation, it will be another but all these are the handy work of the evil ones to distract him.

“Those alleging that Seyi Tinubu sent thugs to attack them, knows in their inner most heart that the allegation is false.

“We therefore condemn that reckless accusation from the self acclaimed NANS President. He is not the NANS President, we have a duly elected NANS President; but this so called Atiku Isah is just but parading himself to discredit the Tinubu led administration.

“We hereby advise Nigerians to ignore that boy. Of what importance is Atiku Isah to us the country, that he will be personally picked up and offered N100million to forget his ambition?

“So those allegations against Seyi are baseless and condemnable.”

Continuing he said: “No amount of campaign of calumny against Seyi Tinubu can stop him from emerging the Governor of Lagos State come 2027; because, when God has ordained you, no man can stop it. Therefore, no matter the amount of campaign of calumny against him, he will still emerge the governor of Lagos come 2027”.

Southeast youths condemn blackmail against Seyi Tinubu

The South East Youth Stakeholders Council has condemned blackmail against Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

It issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Atiku Isah, who they identified as a factional leader of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), to apologise to Seyi Tinubu.

The council accused Isah of orchestrating a politically motivated campaign of blackmail and character assassination against Tinubu.

A statement  by the Chairman of the South East Youth Stakeholders Council, Hon. (Amb.) Eric Uwakwe (JP), said Nigerian students elected Comrade Olusola Oladoja as NANS President, dismissing Isah’s claim to leadership.

The council alleged that Isah’s actions are aimed at damaging Seyi Tinubu’s reputation and hindering his potential ambition to run for governor of Lagos State in 2027.

They further claimed the alleged blackmail was an attempt to implicate the first family and the presidency.

The statement reads in part: “The Southeast youths have watched with dismay the shameful theatrics and dance of one Atiku Isah, who is claiming to be the factional leader of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

“For the records, Nigerian students elected Comrade Olusola Oladoja as their national president alongside NANS executive council. This is public knowledge.

“For Atiku Isah to lay claim as the authentic or factional leader is laughable and highly condemnable.

“Aside from the weighty implication of impersonating a well-respected and recognised student body like NANS, Atiku Isah has unleashed an industrial scale propaganda, blackmail and character assassination against Seyi Tinubu, the number one Youth leader in  Nigeria.

“The persistent politically orchestrated blackmail against Seyi Tinubu and the first family is a slow-motion error in plain sight, a handshake above the elbow that can no longer be tolerated.”

The South East youths vowed to resist any attempts to tarnish Tinubu’s image and have pledged their unwavering support for him, offering to purchase his governorship nomination form in 2027.

They warned Isah and his sponsors to cease their actions or face unspecified consequences as the council insisted that any effort to prevent Seyi Tinubu from contesting the governorship is “an exercise in futility.”

Bribe, torture allegations against Seyi Tinubu unfounded – Group

Education for Accelerated Development (EAD), a Civil Society Organisation, says the recent allegation of bribery against Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu is unfounded.

A factional leader of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Atiku Isah, had alleged that Seyi  offered a him bribe of N100 million naira to support the re-election bid of his father.

However, the Chairman of EAD, Dr Abdulkadir Fuad, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Saturday described the allegation as a hoax and piece of fabrication.

Fuad urged members of the public to ignore the allegations.

“To begin with, the man masquerading as NANS president is an impersonator who goes about seeking cheap relevance in the name of the students body.

“The last time we checked, NANS president was Olusola Ladoja, who is the legitimately and legally recognised leaders of Nigerian students.

“A factional leader of NANS know as Atiku Isah alleged that he was offered a bribe of N100 million naira to support the re-election of President Tinubu. This is totally untrue.

“The election is in 2027 and the President’s son is busy pushing for better welfare for Nigerian youths in his father’s administration, and is least concerned about election that is still two years away.

“When Tinubu won in 2023, was it with the support of someone like Isah or the collective mandate of an overwhelming majority of Nigerians? He won against all odds.

“The masses who backed him in 2023 are even happier with reforms he has initiated to boost the nation’s socio-economic landscape”, Fuad said.

He challenged anyone to tender evidence of bribery against Seyi Tinubu to the appropriate authorities.

The EAD chairman alleged that some people wee envious of the public acceptance the President’s son was gaining among the youth population in every part of the country.

He described as unfounded, the allegations against Seyi of torture, abduction and attempt to disrupt the inauguration of NANS leadership in Abuja.

“If someone believes that Tinubu’s son is involved in a crime and refused to report to the security agencies it means such a person is trying to malign and discredit Seyi Tinubu,” he told NAN.

Seyi Tinubu denies involvement in alleged attack at NANS inauguration

Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, has firmly denied allegations by the president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Atiku Abubakar Isah, accusing him of orchestrating a violent attack during the students’ inauguration event in Abuja.

Isah had claimed that armed thugs loyal to Seyi Tinubu invaded The Wells Carlton Hotel in Asokoro, disrupting the event with cutlasses and firearms.

He alleged that the attackers stabbed participants, looted property, and forced dignitaries, including Senator Ibrahim Shekarau and former Governor Idris Wada, to flee the scene.

Describing the incident as politically motivated, Isah linked the attack to an alleged attempt to bribe and silence him.

In a swift response shared on his official Instagram page, Seyi Tinubu dismissed the allegations as entirely false, baseless, and defamatory.

“I have never held a meeting to discuss any subject matter with Comrade Isah in Lagos or anywhere else in the world,” Seyi wrote.

Expressing disbelief, he added: “Wow…how can someone lie with so much confidence? Wow wow…an attempt to defame any character. May God be with you, Comrade Atiku Isah.”

Seyi Tinubu’s statement has drawn support from his followers, many of whom called for a formal investigation to clear the air.

Seyi Tinubu debunks NANS’ president assassination allegation, says “enough is enough”

Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, has strongly denied allegations by newly elected President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Atiku Abubakar Isah, who accused him of disrupting the NANS inauguration and threatening his life.

Isah had claimed in an interview with SaharaReporters that Seyi Tinubu led armed men to The Wells Carlton Hotel in Asokoro, Abuja, in an attempt to halt the inauguration and allegedly stood outside his hotel room with intentions to harm him.

Responding on Tuesday via his official Instagram account, Seyi Tinubu described the accusations as completely false and defamatory.

Sharing a screenshot of the report, he wrote, “Enough is enough with these fake stories and defamation of my character,” tagging the publication as “fake news.”

Sources close to the event narrated that there was no credible evidence of Seyi’s presence at the hotel, and guests at the venue reported no security breach or lockdown.

They said that neither the hotel management nor law enforcement agencies confirmed any incident involving the president’s son.

Observers have linked the dramatic allegations to the factional disputes that plagued the NANS convention earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Seyi Tinubu’s camp has signalled that legal steps may be taken if the defamation continues unchecked.

  • ‘Seyi Tinubu not behind alleged abduction of self-acclaimed NANS President’

‘Seyi Tinubu not behind alleged abduction of self-acclaimed NANS President’

A group, Friends of Seyi Tinubu (FOST), has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s son, Seyi, never at any point ordered thugs to abduct and brutalise one Comrade Atiku Abubakar Isah, who claims to be President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

The group described allegations against Seyi Tinubu as reckless, saying it’s an attempt to tarnish the good reputation of the President’s son.

A statement by the President of the group, Com. Adejorin Tai Manuel, condemned the publication dated April 16, 2025, alleging Seyi Tinubu was behind the attack on Atiku..

The statement reads: “Mr. Seyi Tinubu is a young, focused, and accomplished individual who has no time, business, or interest in the politics of NANS, let alone stooping so low as to orchestrate violence against someone who is clearly unknown to him.

“The claim that Seyi Tinubu even recognises or acknowledges Comrade Atiku as a threat or enemy is laughable and clearly fabricated. Seyi Tinubu is not a member of NANS, not a patron, nor is he involved in any student political process. He remains committed to his personal and national development engagements, which are far beyond the narrow scope of campus politics.

“It is important to clarify that Comrade Atiku Abubakar Isah does not represent Nigerian students. His claims of being elected at the so-called “125th NANS Convention” are factually incorrect and devoid of logic. NANS, which was founded in 1980, has not held up to 125 conventions in its history. Atiku did not attend the last constitutionally recognized NANS convention, nor did he participate in any legitimate electoral process.

“There is no record of any election conducted that produced him. He has no known executive council, no vice president, no secretary-general, no financial secretary, or any EXCO member to support his claims. He merely woke up, declared himself president, and began parading the title across media platforms without mandate or legitimacy.

“One wonders who Atiku represents, where his mandate originated from, and how the medium failed to ask the most basic questions about his legitimacy before giving him a platform to spread lies.

“The so-called “election” that produced him remains invisible, with no evidence of senator participation or institutional backing. He has been rejected by the mainstream NANS community, and the public deserves to know that the association operates with structure and order not propaganda.

“Dragging the name of Seyi Tinubu into this charade is a calculated smear campaign designed to attract public sympathy and give credibility to a failed quest for recognition.

“But Nigerians are wiser than that. Seyi Tinubu has no business with impostors. His focus remains on uplifting youth, driving entrepreneurship, and contributing meaningfully to the nation’s development—not getting entangled in student leadership dramas. It is therefore absurd and insulting that a man of his pedigree would be linked to such crude behavior.”

  • Seyi Tinubu as presidential asset

    Seyi Tinubu as presidential asset

    • By Jack Okude

Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu, is up and about; touring Nigeria from north to south, east and west. The First Son has been full of doings. He has done welfare and other humanitarian services. If he wasn’t paying school fees, he’s offsetting hospital bills of indigent Nigerians across tribes and tongues.

In this 4th Republic and probably beyond, he stands out as the most visible First Son. However good intentioned his actions have been, some Nigerians have deprecated him for being excessive and too visible on the nation’s public circuit even when he was not the one elected as president. They argue that he is usurping state powers and undermining the duties of official appointees of his father.

Yet, there are some Nigerians who support Seyi Tinubu’s socio-political adventure. They argue that as an adult, he has a right of association, liberty to frolic with Nigerians of his choice and as a member of the First Family, is entitled to privileges that accrue to his father. He cannot be denied the love, care and support of his father just because he’s the president.

Whichever way, the argument swings, it’s expedient to interrogate historical antecedents from other lands with stronger and longer democratic cultures. The United States runs one of the world’s oldest democracies and its democracy has been fraught with quirks and oddities that strip it of imperfection. American democracy has also presented strong attributes that make democracy rank as the best form of government especially with its safety valves of checks and balances.

How has First Children of US Presidential families fared over the years? Were there cases where first children became real assets for their fathers while they were presidents? Or cases that mirror Seyi Tinubu’s disposition and behaviour during his father’s presidency?

Joshua Kendall, editor, writer, political watcher and authority on US politics, in his book, First Dads: Parenting and Politics from George Washington to Barack Obama, provides deep insights into roles played by some first children who helped their fathers in office while they minded the business of America from the Oval Office. Kendall’s no-holds-barred 391-page book painted the picture of some children as assets and others as liabilities to their fathers.

Kendall wrote in his 2016 article in the PolitiCo magazine: “In every presidential contest since 1789, the American people have been elevating to power not just one person but an entire family, usually including several adult children. These children aren’t forced to debate each other; they don’t release their financial or health records, or face endless scrutiny on their policy positions—and yet a tour through history shows that they sometimes turn out to have a significant impact on the presidency. Some have provided valuable assistance to their fathers and the nation, serving as trusted advisers or surrogates.”

On this list of first children is John Quincy Adams, eldest son of John Adams (second US President), who became US president in 1797 at 61, succeeding George Washington. President Adams appointed his eldest son minister to Prussia (German territory which later aided America in the Revolutionary War). This infuriated the Republican opposition. The president was setting a dangerous precedent by giving a job to a family member, they raged. As soon as the dust settled, the young Adams went to work and under his father, he renewed a treaty with Prussia and went on, under later presidents, to play a key role in ending the War of 1812. The young Adams was so smart that even George Washington never hid his admiration for him.  He would later become the sixth president of the United States, making him the first president’s son to later become president.

President Rutherford B. Hayes (19th US President) appointed his second son, Webb, at just 20 years old at the time, as his private secretary after President Hayes took office in 1877. Webb later became an incredible asset to his father including playing the role of official greeter at White House social functions—a duty typically served by the Marshal of the District of Columbia. That position was then occupied by Frederick Douglass, a black slave, who was resented by southerners. To avoid further resentment, Webb took on the role of greeter. Webb’s political career grew and he later served in three wars—the Spanish-American War, Philippine-American War and First World War—and won the Congressional Medal of Honour.

And then there was Anna Roosevelt, Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s (FDR) daughter, who was said to have saved the president’s (her father) life. In 1944, the 37-year-old mother of three, working as a journalist in Seattle, moved to Washington to settle into the Lincoln Suite and become her father’s unpaid personal assistant. From being close to her father, Anna noticed that Dr. Ross McIntire, the president’s personal physician, had not been monitoring FDR’s blood pressure regularly. At her request, the sickly president was moved to Bethesda Naval Hospital for a full medical check.  FDR was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and proper medication was then administered.

Anna became her father’s constant companion, confidante and gatekeeper, and as such “wielded enormous influence.” It was said that Anna convinced her father to choose Harry Truman rather than Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas as his next vice-president, prompting Life magazine to assert: “Daddy’s girl is running Daddy.” Anna became part of FDR’s international trips and diplomatic shuttles and was reported to have helped the terminally ill FDR function at a high-level even in his dying days.

President Bill Clinton’s only child, Chelsea, according to those close to the Clintons, “shapes almost every significant decision her parents make.” Donald Trump in his first term in office has four adult children, all trusted members of his inner circle. Ivanka Trump served as a surrogate and adviser on the campaign trail.

In Nigeria, Seyi has stepped up the dais. He is building bridges, making friends for his father and connecting with Nigerians especially the youths. What he is doing is historical. Nigerians did not have to vote for him before he could make friends and connect with Nigerians. Besides, it is within his remit, a successful businessman, an adult and a freeborn citizen to move round the country to meet with old friends and make new ones. His actions are nationalistic. He did not pander to any particular ethnic or religious group. He is a friend of one and all. His hand of friendship stretches across social strata, across religion and across ethnic nationalities. This is who he is. A nationalist who loves his country and its people. The fact that he’s the First Son should not strip him of his humanity. It is not his fault that he came from a privileged family. He has not broken any law by making friends of all tribes and tongues. Being the son or daughter of a president should not be a curse. First children in older and more sophisticated democracies have been known to become integral parts of their father’s inner cabinet and think-tank. Seyi Tinubu is working hard to help his father build a better Nigeria as did other children in other democracies. Critics should take a break and offer suggestions on how to deliver value in the nation’s young democracy.
