Fans liken Eagles’ 2-0 loss to earthquake

Uyo fans have said the Super Eagles’ 2-0 loss to Bafana Bafana of South Africa in the 2019 AFCON qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium struck them as an earthquake.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) after watching the match on Saturday, the Secretary of Akwa Ibom  Football Association, Joseph Eberefe, said that the loss struck him “like earthquake”.

“It is disappointing, we did not expect this, it is very frustrating.

“The absence of regular players like Victor Moses, Mikel Obi and the others were felt on the pitch,

“These ones have tried but they are not experienced as the usual Eagles players,” Eberefe said.

In his reaction, the Speaker of the Akwa Ibom House of Assembly, Onofiok Luke, said that he was short of words to describe the shock of the loss.

“I cannot comment, it is simply no comment from me,” Luke said.

Former Deputy Speaker, Akwa Ibom House of Assembly, Uwem Udoma, said that the Eagles’ performance disappointed the entire fans.

“We should always use the best, we should not use our second eleven and expect to win.

“This is a lesson for Nigeria to do enough to defend well and win its matches.

“Our goalkeeper is inexperienced, he left the goalpost and caused the second goal,” Udoma said.

He, however, said that football was a game and the fans enjoyed themselves during the match.

Another fan, Tom Odiong, said that the South African team was technically better than the Eagles players.

“We missed Victor Moses and Mikel Obi in the match, their experience matters,” Odiong said.

NAN reports that Bafana Bafana team scored in the 56th minute and 83rd  minutes by  Tokelo Rantie and Percy Tau respectively.

The South African second goal sent cold shivers on football fans while some of them left the stadium abruptly in frustration with sighing on their lips.

  • MOSES SENT OFF AS ARSENAL WIN FA CUP

MOSES SENT OFF AS ARSENAL WIN FA CUP

HE saved the best for last, Arsene Wenger. Or, at least, his team saved their very best performance of their season for their last game.

A mesmerising Arsenal side outplayed the Premier League champions; they should have won be a far greater margin, hitting the woodwork three times; they played like a Wenger side, but one from twelve years ago. They had panache, obduracy, commitment and zeal.

Arsenal won the FA Cup for a record 13th time and it means Wenger is the most successful manager in the competition’s history with seven victories.

The Gunners had controversially taken the lead in the fifth minute through Alexis Sanchez, but the linesman had his flag up for Aaron Ramsey, who was stood in an offside position. Ramsey did not touch the ball, allowing Sanchez to run through and slot in.Arsenal dominated the first half and could have doubled their advantage but Danny Welbeck struck the woodwork with a header and Ramsey chested the ball against the same post on the follow-up.

Victor Moses forced David Ospina into a fine save in the second period, before the Chelsea wing-back was given a second yellow card on 68 minutes for diving in the penalty area.

With 14 minutes remaining, the Blues got back into the game through Diego Costa’s shot that bobbled in, but Ramsey headed in the winner just two minutes later. The Welshman had also scored the winning goal in the 2014 cup final against Hull.

Arsenal could have had another late on, but Mesut Ozil struck the post from inside the area.

Wenger had major selection issues with Laurent Koscielny suspended and both Shkodran Mustafi and Gabriel injured, so centre-back Per Mertesacker was given his first start of the season. The German defender put in a dominant display to keep Costa quiet.

Chelsea failed to gain revenge for the 2002 final, which Arsenal won 2-0, and the result ends their run of four consecutive final victories.

  • How Conte turned my game around – VICTOR MOSES

How Conte turned my game around – VICTOR MOSES

It was a decision that would change his career at Chelsea forever. But as Victor Moses prepared to embark on his fifth season at Stamford Bridge since joining from Wigan Athletic in 2012, the first he knew of it was when Antonio Conte broke the news before their trip to Hull City on 1 October. “He didn’t say to me: ‘Do you fancy playing wing-back?’ He just put me in there,” Moses recalled after the 3-0 victory over Middlesbrough that took Chelsea to within three points of a fifth Premier League title.

“After that he just kept on encouraging me and went through it with me, what the position was all about, mostly in training. And constantly he was talking to me in training to make sure I was improving in it, talking me through it. I took that in and I didn’t look back.”

Nearly a decade since he made his first-team debut at Crystal Palace at the age of 16, Moses has finally come of age. The schoolboy superstar who arrived in London as an asylum seeker after his parents were brutally murdered during religious riots in Nigeria’s north-western Kaduna province in 2002 is now an integral part of the Chelsea team having spent the best part of four years on the bench or on loan.

Before this season he had made only 12 Premier League starts for his parent club, with the spells at Liverpool, Stoke City and West Ham United having failed to convince José Mourinho of his worth. The arrival of Conte, who admitted he found it “incredible” how sparingly his predecessor had utilised him, changed all that. Moses has played an integral part in the Italian’s 3-4-3 system.

“I have always believed in the ability that I have got,” Moses reflected. “I have always known that I’ve got the ability to play in a big club like Chelsea. I have proved that. We have got a manager here that is willing to give everybody an opportunity.

“To be honest, I just wanted to play football,” he added. “It was at Hull that it all started. I really enjoyed it and I took everything in. I kept watching the video of myself after the Hull game, to make sure I was in the right place, and after that I took it in and kept on improving.”

A regular in England’s youth teams, Moses opted to switch allegiance to Nigeria in 2011 after growing frustrated with his lack of recognition. He was voted into the team of the tournament when the Super Eagles won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations but had struggled to replicate that form for his country until the appointment of Gernot Rohr as coach last year. Now, with Nigeria in a strong position to reach the 2018 World Cup in Russia thanks to two goals from Moses against Algeria in November, he has emerged as a real contender to be named African player of the year. If Victor Moses wants to be [Lionel] Messi, he can be Messi,” said Daniel Amokachi, who was the assistant to Nigeria’s coach, Stephen Keshi, in 2013 and also comes from Kaduna. “It’s been a very long time since I’ve seen a player who has so many qualities. We have talked a lot. And what I told him, I told him every time. If you want to be the best that you can, then you have to work harder. In the past he was a player who can sometimes switch off. You speak to people who train with [Cristiano] Ronaldo and Messi and they tell you it is incredible how hard they work. That seems to have sunk in now thanks to Conte.”

The overall statistics do not necessarily bear that out in comparison with some of the best right-backs in the league, although Chelsea’s win percentage of 81 when Moses is in the side certainly speaks volumes.

In terms of distance covered, he is way behind Tottenham Hotspur’s Kyle Walker (272km to 312km from 32 games), while he also trails Everton’s Séamus Coleman in terms of goals and assists (three goals and two assists to Coleman’s four goals and three assists). Yet it has been his ability to adapt to Conte’s refined tactical approach which has underlined his importance to the champions-elect.

“It’s a big position. You need a lot of stamina to be able to play there, and it’s a responsibility,” said Moses. “I have been learning a lot defensively as well, the manager has been teaching me and I have taken everything in. When I play against a winger, because I’m a winger myself, I understand what they are going to do before they try and go past me, so it makes it a lot easier for me. The more games I play the better I get.”

Red card spoils Victor Moses party

Super Eagles forward Victor Moses booked a painful exit from the FA Cup  finals in Wimbley on Saturday after he was given the marching orders by Centre referee in the 68 minutes. Moses had been accused of falling to the ground under a non-existent challenge forcing the referee to hand him a second yellow and subsequently a red having earned the first yellow in the 11th minute of the match.

The Nigerian was seen walking away from the pitch and down the tunnel with disappointment written all over his face.

Moses’s marching orders may have contributed to eventual loss of the Blues who were eyeing a double after pocketing the league title with their Champions League ticket also in the kitty.

The Football Association announced earlier in May that it will introduce a new rule on diving for next season, with players able to be banned respectively if they are found guilty of simulation.

A panel comprising an ex-match official, one former manager and a retired player will meet to review each case independently.

Moses who was left out Nigeria’s friendly matches as he concentrated on his club’s chase for laurels celebrated the league title elaborately with his family and was looking forward to replicating the same thing after the FA cup, a dream which hit the rocks with a bang following his marching orders and Chelsea’s eventual 2-1 loss.

Victor Moses Lifts First Premier League Trophy with the Blues

Nigerian international and Super Eagles football star, Victor Moses, on Sunday made history as he joined his club-side to lift the English Premier League Champions title for the first time as a professional player.

The Nigerian professional footballer played as a winger or wing-back on either flank for Chelsea in the successful 2016/2017 campaign won by the blues.

Moses began his career in the Championship with Crystal Palace, before his performances caught the eye of Wigan Athletic, where he made his Premier League debut in 2010. After two years, his game had improved to the extent that European champions Chelsea were interested, and he signed for them in the summer of 2012.

Despite ten goals in all competitions during his first season, he spent his second season on loan to Liverpool, his third on loan at Stoke City and his fourth on loan at West Ham United.

Born in Nigeria, Moses represented England at under-16, under-17, under-19 and under-21 levels, but opted to play for Nigeria as opposed to being fully capped for England. He has gained over 20 caps for Nigeria since his debut in 2012, and played in their winning campaign at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, as well as the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Netting just four goals, the Nigerian international key perfect into Conte’s 3-4-3 formation that saw the team dismantled Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City to keep their home record intact.

Goals from Willian, Eden Hazard, Pedro Rodriguez and a brace from substitute Michy Batshuayi ensure the Blues finish the season at home on winning just the way started the beginning of the season.

The victory means Chelsea end the season on 93 points while Conte claims his first Premier League trophy in his first attempt in England.

Moses credits Conte for reviving his career

Chelsea’s Victor Moses has credited manager Antonio Conte for reviving his career at Stamford Bridge by converting him into a wing back during their Premier League title charge this season.

The 26-year-old Nigeria international was previously sent out on loan for three consecutive seasons by manager Jose Mourinho before Conte arrived this season and changed Chelsea’s main formation to 3-4-3.

That reshuffle brought Moses back into the starting lineup, and has helped make him one of the most consistent performers this season, making 37 appearances in all competitions.

“He (Conte) didn’t say to me, ‘Do I fancy playing wing back?’ He just put me in there, and after that he just kept on encouraging me,” Moses told British media.

“He went through what the position was all about, constantly talking to me in training to make sure I was improving in it. I took that in and I didn’t look back,” he said.

“I have been learning a lot defensively. And when I play against a winger…I understand what they are going to do before they try and go past me, so it makes it a lot easier.”

Moses said the position has added responsibilities at both the attacking and defensive ends, but he is enjoying the experience with every game.

“You need a lot of stamina to be able to play that position, and it’s a responsibility for me as well,” he added.

“I have never played that position before, but I am enjoying it.. The more games I play, the better I get.”

League leaders Chelsea hold a seven-point advantage over Tottenham Hotspur and can seal the title if they beat West Bromwich Albion away on Friday.

Moses inches away from FA Cup title as Chelsea hit final

Super Eagles forward Victor Moses was in action for 95 minutes as Chelsea walloped Tottenham 4-2 to book a place in the finals of the FA Cup on Saturday. Playing in front of 86,355 spectators at the Wimbley Stadium, Chelsea, who have won the prestigious FA Cup seven times, shot into the lead through Willian in the 5th minute of the match. The tie however turned into a ding-dong affair as Tottenham leveled up in the 18th minute thanks to Kane.  Willian again shot the Blues ahead after converting a penalty in the 43rd minute which Dele Alli was quick to cancel nine minutes later.

It was however goals by Eden Hazard and Nemanja Matic in the 75th and 80th minute respectively that finally shot the game beyond the reach of hard fighting Tottenham.

Chelsea will patiently wait for the outcome of the second semifinal tie between Arsenal and Arsenal and Manchester City on Sunday to get an opponent for the May 27th final showdown.

David Luiz got a 10 out of 10 rating in the encounter after posting a splendid performance leading the victory.

Moses was not left out in the top performance classification as he got a nine out of ten rating for his effort. The full player rating is as follows: Courtois 5, Azpilicueta 8, David Luiz 10, Ake 9, Moses 9, Matic 7, Kante 7, Alonso 4, Pedro 5, Willian 9, Batshuayi 4. Moses set to return against Bournemouth

Injury sidelined Super Eagles forward Victor Moses is in line to return for Chelsea against Bournemouth on Saturday, a tie that manager Antonio Conte believes will be a “great challenge” for the Premier League leaders.

A calf injury kept Moses out of the shock 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace last Saturday and the 2-1 win over Manchester City on Wednesday.

Conte experimented with Pedro at the right wing-back position against Palace before moving Cesar Azpilicueta into the role for the visit of Pep Guardiola’s men, with Kurt Zouma returning to the centre of the defence.

And, although he hopes to have Moses fully fit for the match at Vitality Stadium, Conte has praised his squad for ensuring that the loss of regular members of the starting line-up has not been damaging to their title charge.

Asked about Moses’ fitness, Conte told a news conference: “He trained with us. I have to check his situation and then make the best decision for the team. But he is available.

“Victor Moses showed this season that he is an important player for us, but in the games against Crystal Palace and City we showed that we can play without him.

“We are a team, not 11 single players. If you think you can win a game with only one player, you are in trouble, because if you miss this player then it’s impossible to win.

“I’m pleased when this happens because it means every single player is into our football. During the training sessions, I have 20 players and I train them in the same way, because I know that anything can happen during the season and you must have players available.

Chelsea fans eager to have Moses back

Chelsea fans have clamoured for Victor Moses’ immediate return to action after Antonio Conte’s side seemed to have struggled in their two recent games played without the injured Nigerian international.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Moses has missed Chelsea’s last two Premier League games against Crystal Palace and Manchester City due to injury.

His last game for Chelsea was in their 2-1 away win against Stoke City in March and it is not yet confirmed if he will feature against Bournemouth on Saturday at the Vitality Stadium.

Following Moses’ continued absence, some of Chelsea fans took to twitter on Friday to express their wish that the right-wing-back get back into the team as quickly as possible.

4EverDope @Flimzzy889 said he wished that Moses could be ready for their away trip to Manchester United next Sunday.

“We’ve missed you a lot (Moses) and I pray you recover quickly before our match against Man United,’’ he said.
Luke @LukePainter said that he couldn’t wait for Moses’ return.

“Swift recovery Victor. Need you back,’’ he said.

Ollie Glanvill @OllieGlanvill urged that Moses should be included in Chelsea’s squad to face Bournemouth this Saturday.

“Get back for Bournemouth Vic, going to be big,’’ he said.

On his part, J @jwv1995 confessed that Moses had been missed by the fans and the team.

“Hope to see you back in the side soon Vic, we need you.”

Also, in other tweets, Sideways @Stamfordrich wrote: “Need you back asap.”

While, Blessed Samuel @BlessedSamuel88 said: “We need you back on the pitch… Your impact is missed. Wish you come back soon.”

London Friendly: Hope rises for Moses

Indications that Super Eagles forward Victor Moses will be available for the double header friendly matches against Senegal and Burkina Faso emerged Saturday as the former Wigan Athletic was in action for 70 minutes against Stoke City.

Moses who pulled out mid-way in the FA Cup victory against Manchester United on Monday, was initially placed on the sideline list but performance against Stoke is an indication that he has bounced back to fitness.

Moses who has featured in virtually every match played by the Blues in recent times will be a huge boost for Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr who is hoping to use the friendly matches to shape up his team ahead of the World cup qualifiers against Cameroon and Algeria respectively.

Brazilian import William shot the Blues into the lead in the 13th minute of Saturday’s match with Jonathan Waiters getting an equaliser for the homers in the 38th minute.

Stoke however lost grip of the game when a more daring Chelsea increased the tally three minutes to end of regulation time through Gary Cahill, and maintained 65% dominance to the final whistle.  The victory has further place the Stamford Bridge landlords in a vintage position to win the league even as they look forward to FA cup semifinals clash against Tottenham Hotspur next Saturday. Some believe the Antonio Conte boys stand a good chance of making it a double this season.
