Chelsea tops EPL as Victor Moses delivers winning goal

Chelsea Football Club on Saturday came from one goal down to end Tottenham Hotspur’s unbeaten Premier League record with a 2-1 victory.

Liverpool and Manchester City were past Chelsea earlier in the day and fell behind in the 11th minute when Christian Eriksen became the first player to score past them in seven games.

But Pedro Rodriguez’s glorious curler and a Victor Moses tap-in either side of half-time gave Chelsea a seventh successive win — their longest such run within one season since January to April 2007.

Chelsea, who visit City next weekend, restored a one-point advantage over second-place Liverpool and left London rivals Tottenham seven points below them in fifth place.

The victory propelled Antonio Conte’s soaring side back into top spot.

Nigeria 3-1 Algeria: Moses, Mikel fire Eagles to vital win

Chelsea duo Victor Moses and John Obi Mikel starred as Nigeria moved into full control of their World Cup qualifying group with a 3-1 home victory over Algeria in Uyo.
Moses and Mikel were on target in the first half, before Nabil Bentaleb’s goal after the break gave Algeria hope of a comeback.
But Moses scored his second in the final moments as Gernot Rohr’s side won their second straight game in the final stage of CAF qualification.
The win puts the Super Eagles four points clear of nearest challengers Cameroon in Group B, with Algeria and Zambia a further one behind. Only the pool winners will make it to Russia in 2018.
Moses had already created the best early chance in the first meeting between the two sides since the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations when he cut inside and fired wide, but the Chelsea winger made no mistake after 25 minutes.
After collecting a pass from Mikel, Moses took advantage of poor defending from Hicham Belkaroui to fire into the bottom corner, before being booked for removing his shirt in celebration.
Bentaleb squandered a wonderful chance to equalise for Algeria, firing over from eight yards after controlling from Yacine Brahimi’s excellent run and cross down the left – and that miss cost the visitors when Nigeria doubled their lead three minutes before the break.
Etebo Oghenekaro’s pass found a shocked Mikel completely unmarked in the middle of Algeria’s box after he had been played onside by full-back Aissa Mandi and the captain finished with ease for his first international goal in over three years.
Algeria pressed in a bid to get back into the game and Bentaleb scored a stunning goal with 23 minutes remaining, rifling into the top corner from 30 yards after being found by Riyad Mahrez.
Brahimi then came close with two late efforts, but Moses grabbed his second in stoppage-time, finishing coolly from substitute Ahmed Musa’s cross as Nigeria secured a win that puts them in a strong position with four games to play.

Victor Moses is sensational – Phil Neville

Manchester United legend Phil Neville has described Super Eagles winger Victor Moses as a sensational player following his recent form for Chelsea in the premier league.

The 25-year-old has been a super regular for the London outfit as new Blues manager Antonio Conte has converted him to a wing-back this season.

With the Nigerian playing a key role Chelsea went through the month of October winning all their premier league fixtures without conceding a goal and that resulted in the Italian being nominated for his first manager of the month award in England.

“Since Conte switched to the 3-4-3 formation, Victor Moses has been sensational for Chelsea and has helped freed up the likes of Eden Hazard, William, and Diego Costa,” Neville said.

The form of Moses will gladden the heart of Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr who will hope he replicates it for the national team when they square up against Algeria on November 12 in the 2018 World Cup qualifier.

Dream Team VI handler Samson Siasia left Nigeria yesterday aboard British Airways flight to London to meet with Super Eagles Captain Mikel Obi, West Ham striker Victor Moses, Watford forward Odion Ighalo over the prospect of joining the Rio 2016 Olympics bound team.

Siasia has over 10 shortlisted over-aged players on the 60-players pool submitted for this year’s Olympics and he is taking his time to know where exactly is needed to beef up the team for the competition which he almost led the Nigerian team to the final of the 2008 edition in Beijing, China losing the gold medal to the Lionel Messi led Argentina.

The Coach is eyeing the gold medal of this year’s edition and he has mapped out visitations to London, Germany, Spain and France to meet one on one with the likely players that falls within the age bracket of the competition and over-aged players too.

His first point of call is England where he left for yesterday morning and he would use the opportunity to watch the Chelsea versus Leicester last English Premier League match after which he would now sit down to discuss with the Eagles captain, NationsSport learnt exclusively from a top source from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in Abuja.

He also has a special date with West Ham striker Victor Moses and Watford star Odion Ighalo on the possibilities of joining the team for the Olympics.

You know very well that the Olympics Football Tournament is not in the calendar of FIFA”, he observed then.

Eagles’ AFCON miss: Victor Moses weeps like a baby

•On loan West Ham star broke down in dressing room
    •Winger mocked by Mikel, others

The Super Eagles of Nigeria may have failed to qualify for the African Cup of Nations for the second time in a row but for Victor Moses, it was as if the whole world crumbled on him few minutes after South African referee Daniel Bennett  blew the final whistle in Alexandria last Tuesday.

The Nigerian side needed a crucial win to keep their hope of qualification alive, but the Samson Siasia led side lost by a lone goal to Egypt and Moses who unarguably dazzled in the game broke down in the dressing room.

A source told SportingLife that the on loan West Ham star looked like an unserious player during the national team’s camping period and that’s why coaches prefer to use him largely as a substitute.

It was understood that throughout the match in Alexandria last Tuesday, the technical crew of the Eagles were surprised at the seriousness with which the ex-Wigan winger approached the game.

Moses was indeed a thorn in the flesh of the Egyptians every time he had the ball on his feet with his pacy runs and dribbles. He was the only player in the Eagles that had the confidence to take on the Pharaohs and could have crowned his efforts with a goal when his low drive hit the  goal post in the dying minutes of the game.

“Moses was the worst hit after the game in Alexandria,” the source began.

“He wept like a baby and could not be consoled in the dressing room. It was really an emotional scene because he had always appeared like a hard man in camp.

“The coaches and the players begged him to stop crying all to no avail. He was visibly heartbroken and at a point, Mikel had to make jest of him by calling him a cry baby.

“Victor Moses has never been seen in that mood in camp. The coach told him that he should be consoled by the fact that he gave his best in the game. Infact, he was the last person to leave the dressing room,” the source disclosed.

Moses may have put that sad experience in Alexandria behind him as he was an unused substitute in West Ham’s 2-2 home draw against Crystal Palace in an English Premier League game played yesterday.

  • I’m committed to Nigeria – Moses

I’m committed to Nigeria – Moses

West Ham winger, Victor Moses, has refuted claims that he is more committed to his English Premier League side than the Super Eagles.

Moses last featured for Nigeria in the 0-2 defeat to France at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Goal reports.

However, the former Wigan Athletic winger has said his commitment to Nigeria is undisputable and 100 per cent.

“I’m proud to be a Nigerian international and am always committed to playing for my country,” Goal quoted Moses as saying on BBC Sport.

“It’s the best feeling representing your country and I always want to perform and give 100 per cent for the team.

“Unfortunately, I have not been able to play due to injuries, but I have an unwavering commitment to Nigeria.

“There is a new manager and the team has been doing well but without me.

“I’m prepared to give it my all and fight for a place on a regular basis, that’s my aim.

“This is football, a competitive stage and I have to fight hard to get in but I don’t mind doing that.”

‘Why Oliseh axed Victor Moses from Eagles’

Victor Moses was left out of next month’s 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Swaziland because he skipped Nigeria’s recent friendlies in Belgium, a top soccer official told africanFootball.com.

Moses has impressed at West Ham, where is playing on loan from English Premier League giants, Chelsea, but angered coach Sunday Oliseh when he opted out of friendly matches against DR Congo and Cameroon as a precautionary measure against injury.

“Oliseh was far from happy with Victor Moses when he withdrew from the friendlies against DRC and Cameroon in Belgium and that was why he left him out of the squad,” the official who was with the Super Eagles in Belgium, told africanFootball.com

“The player cannot choose the games he will play for Nigeria.”

Moses and his handlers have always tried to stay clear of friendly matches involving national team, preferring for the player to only be called up for competitive games.

The West Ham forward was outstanding when Nigeria won a third African Nations Cup two years ago, but he has not featured for the Eagles for several months.
