  • Oborevwori: Setting the gold standard in sporting excellence

Oborevwori: Setting the gold standard in sporting excellence

    By Efeturi Onokpasa

Since assuming office as Governor of Delta State, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori has not merely supported athletics but has elevated sports in general to a cornerstone of state pride and youth empowerment. His administration’s unwavering commitment to sporting excellence reached a crescendo with the fulfillment of a bold pledge he made to athletes who competed in the 2025 National Sports Festival, otherwise known as the Gateway Games which was hosted by Ogun State, few days ago.

That “Ukodo,” as Governor Oborevwori is popularly called in socio-political circles in the state will make good his promise, not only galvanized Team Delta to put up one of the best performances at the sports meet, it led inexorably to a triumphant return and solidified the state’s unchallenged dominance in Nigeria’s sporting landscape. Through strategic investments, motivational incentives, and a philosophy that prioritizes human capital development through the “MORE Agenda”, Oborevwori is redefining what it means to lead in sports governance.

Delta State’s sporting legacy is nothing short of legendary. Often dubbed the “Nigeria’s Sports Powerhouse,” Delta State has clinched the overall championship at the National Sports Festival an astonishing nine times consecutively, a streak that underscores decades of deliberate nurturing of talent. From the dusty fields of local communities to the roar of national stadiums, Delta has produced national super icons in athletics thus proving that grassroots investment yields global glory. Interestingly, under Oborevwori’s stewardship as governor, this legacy has evolved from mere tradition to a meticulously engineered machine of success. His “MORE Agenda,” a blueprint for inclusive growth—allocates substantial resources to sports infrastructure, coaching programs, and athlete welfare, ensuring that no promising talent slips through the cracks. This holistic approach has been pivotal in maintaining Delta’s supremacy in sports.

The 2025 National Sports Festival, held from May 16 to 30th in Abeokuta, Ogun State, served as the ultimate reference point for Oborevwori’s vision. The Gateway Games, the 22nd edition of this biennial sports extravaganza in the country, brought together over 5,000 athletes from across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, competing in 35 sporting disciplines ranging from athletics and wrestling to table tennis and para-sports. For Delta, the stakes were sky-high: not just to defend their title but to inspire a new generation amid whispers of rising competition from states like Bayelsa, Lagos and Rivers.

And this is where Governor Oborevwori’s game-changing pledge matters. In the lead-up to the festival, during a morale-boosting send-forth ceremony in Asaba, the governor promised unprecedented financial rewards to motivate his Team Delta. “Excellence must be rewarded,” he declared, outlining a tiered incentive structure: one million naira for each gold medal, five hundred thousand for silver, and two hundred and fifty thousand for bronze. This was no empty rhetoric. It was a calculated infusion of fiscal firepower designed to transform abstract motivation into tangible drive.

The impact was immediate and profound. Team Delta comprising athletes, officials, and support staff, stormed the MKO Abiola Stadium and other venues with determination that echoed across the country. By the time the curtains fell  on the sports festival on May 29, 2025, they had amassed a staggering haul of 126 gold medals, 100 silver, and 111 bronze, totaling 337 medals—a haul that dwarfed other competitors and reaffirmed Delta State’s stranglehold on the top spot.

Bayelsa settled for second with a respectable but distant tally, while host Ogun clinched third, highlighting Delta’s tactical edge in high-medal events like athletics where it swept a whopping 45 gold medals and wrestling 32 gold medals. Of particular note is the standout performance of a young sprinter Ejiro Okoro’s double gold in the 100m and 200m dashes. Then there was the para-athletics squad’s clean sweep in seven events, thus showcasing the inclusivity that is apparent in the champion’s team. These victories weren’t flukes, they stemmed from rigorous pre-festival camps funded by the state government, international coaching exchanges, and psychological support sessions that instilled a winner’s mindset in the athletes, all orchestrated by Oborevwori’s winning aura.

Significantly, what set this edition apart, however, was the governor’s fulfillment of his pledge—a masterstroke in leadership that transcended the medals. Talk of a promise keeper. On September 18, 2025, Oborevwori hosted a grand reception at the Delta State Government House in Asaba for the sporting ambassadors. In a ceremony brimming with jubilation, he personally handed over cheques totaling hundreds of millions of naira to the heroes of Ogun 2025. Gold medalists like Okoro pocketed N1 million for each medal, their eyes lighting up with the realization that their sweat equity had real-world value. Silver and bronze recipients followed suit, with N500,000 and N250,000 respectively, ensuring every contributor felt valued. Officials, from coaches to medical personnel, received N200,000 bonuses, acknowledging the ecosystem behind the stars.

“This is not just about money; it’s about building a culture where excellence is the norm,” Oborevwori remarked, his words resonating with athletes who recounted how the pre-game promise fueled late-night trainings and unbreakable team spirit.

This commitment to fulfillment is no isolated gesture; it’s the linchpin of Delta’s enduring dominance. In a nation where sports funding often evaporates post-victory, Oborevwori’s reliability has created a virtuous cycle. Athletes train harder, knowing rewards await; coaches innovate without budgetary fears; and communities rally behind a program that delivers jobs, pride, and economic ripple effects. Consider the numbers: Delta’s medal count has grown by 15% since Oborevwori took office, correlating directly with a 20% increase in state sports allocations. This motivation has permeated beyond the festival, propelling Delta squads to glory in continental events like the African Games and fostering talents who now eye Olympic berths. Young athletes in Warri and Ughelli, inspired by tales of millionaire medalists, flood local academies, swelling participation rates by 30% in the last year alone.

Moreover, Oborevwori’s approach addresses deeper societal needs. Sports in Delta isn’t elitist; it’s a ladder for social mobility. Many athletes hail from humble beginnings, using platforms like the festival to escape poverty. Female athletes, in particular, have thrived under this regime, with women’s teams securing 40% of Delta’s golds in Ogun, a testament to gender-inclusive policies that include maternity support for competitors.

The ripple effects extend nationally. Other governors now eye Delta’s model, with states like Edo and Anambra replicating reward systems. Yet, Oborevwori’s edge lies in authenticity—his pledge wasn’t a campaign gimmick but a fulfillment of a lifelong passion for sports, honed as a former student athlete himself. By receiving the Torch of Unity in May, symbolizing the festival’s spirit, he infused the event with personal gravitas, urging unity among the many ethnic groups in Nigeria. This holistic ethos—blending motivation, resources, and recognition—has made Delta not just winners, but architects of a sporting renaissance.

In Oborevwori, one sees a leader who understands that true excellence is forged in the fire of commitment. The 2025 Gateway Games weren’t merely a victory lap; they were a manifesto in motion, proving that when leaders back words with wallets, miracles happen on the field. As Delta prepares to defend its crown in future festivals—perhaps eyeing Enugu 2027—the governor’s gold standard gleams brighter than any medal.

For athletes nationwide, his message is clear: strive, and the rewards will follow. In Oborevwori, Nigeria has found a champion whose legacy will echo through stadiums for generations, setting an unassailable benchmark in the pursuit of sporting greatness.

Nigeria @ 65: Oborevwori urges Nigerians to embrace unity, shun division

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has urged Nigerians to embrace unity and steer clear of factors that divide them.

Speaking on Wednesday at the Cenotaph, Asaba, during the ceremony marking Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary, Oborevwori highlighted the occasion as a moment to honour the sacrifices of the nation’s founding fathers, reflect on collective progress, and renew commitment to a prosperous future.

Represented by his deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, the governor said, “The true strength of Delta lies in its people. As we mark Nigeria’s independence, let us also embrace independence in our daily lives: independence from ethnic division and rivalry, independence from dependency by embracing hard work, enterprise, and creativity, and independence from forces that divide us by uniting under the common banner of One Delta.”

“This day reminds us of how far we have come as a nation, and it also challenges us to focus on developing a paradigm shift to improve our focus on sustainable development.

“Independence Day is a time to remember, to reflect, and to renew. We remember the sacrifices of our founding fathers and the many heroes who fought for the freedom we enjoy today. We reflect on our journey as a nation, the victories, the struggles, and the lessons. And we renew our commitment to the values of unity, peace, and progress.

“I also thank every Delta person, both at home and abroad, for standing with this administration. Your support remains the strength behind our progress.

“I join all Nigerians to congratulate His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on this anniversary. May God continue to guide him with wisdom and strength as he leads our country through thorny roads to prosperity and enduring peace and security.

“Here in Delta State, we are working with focus and determination under the MORE Agenda. Our goal is simple: to improve lives, create opportunities, and secure the future of our children.

“This administration is carrying out a sustained infrastructure development programme in the transport sector, especially in the areas of highway construction, flyover bridges, urban and rural roads development, drainage schemes, and waterways structures.

“We are building bridges and repairing numerous roads, we have carried out urban renewal projects and improved flood control and drainage systems. These projects are connecting communities, opening up opportunities, consolidating economic bases, and making our towns and cities safer and more comfortable to live in.”

The governor believed that health is wealth, noting that the development had made it imperative to upgrade the state’s hospitals, improve primary health centres, and provide modern machines such as dialysis, CT scans, and 4D ultrasound scanners.

He further said, “Today, pregnant women, children under five, widows, and senior citizens enjoy free health care, while thousands more are covered under our health insurance scheme.

“In education, we are investing in our young people. We want to prepare them for the digital age by creating ICT hubs and training centres that will make Delta a leader in technology and innovation. At the same time, we are supporting the vulnerable through job creation programmes and social welfare schemes. Here in Delta State, we are determined that nobody will be left behind.

“My dear people, what we see today is progress. It is proof of your resilience and the hard work of the government. Democracy allows criticism, but let us focus on constructive ideas that will build our State, not dwell on negativity that tears it and our people down.”

He appealed to the people to continue their support for this administration and not to be distracted by those who parade themselves as critics but thrive on mischief.

He added, “Such voices, often sponsored by vested interests, seek only to take advantage of our resilience and tolerance. We must not allow them to derail our collective progress. We are on the right path, and with your steadfast support, we will go even further.

“The journey ahead is still long, but together we are heading towards sustainable progress, having a happy populace confident of their hopes for a better tomorrow. But the government alone cannot build the Delta of our dreams.

“The primary responsibility of any government is to safeguard the lives and property of its citizens. This duty is even more compelling today. Since assuming office, we have pursued peace and security with great commitment, and I can say with confidence that our initiatives have recorded remarkable success, notwithstanding a few challenges.

“Today, our waterways are safe and open for navigation and commerce. We continue to work closely with all security agencies to sustain the peace and stability we currently enjoy. I wish to sincerely thank our people, especially the youths and the various security agencies in the State, for their steadfast support in our collective pursuit of peace and security.

“With the support of traditional rulers, religious leaders, the private sector, public servants, civil society, and every citizen, Delta will continue to rise. Our future is bright, and with unity and determination, we will achieve it. To our youths, I say: use your energy for positive ventures.”

The occasion featured an inspection of the Guard of Honour, march past by military and paramilitary agencies.

It was also well attended by top government functionaries, traditional rulers, among others.

‘Oborevwori committed to sustaining peace in Delta’

The Executive Assistant to the Governor on Public Enlightenment, Projects and Policies, Olisa Ifeajika, has reaffirmed that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori remains firmly committed to sustaining the peace Delta State has enjoyed for over two decades.

Speaking on Thursday on “The Faculty”, a programme aired on Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS), Asaba, Ifeajika recalled the violent crisis that engulfed Warri between the Ijaws and Itsekiris from 1997 to 1999, describing it as a dark period that left bitter memories.

“We have been enjoying peace in the state since those turbulent years when the Ijaws and Itsekiris were at daggers drawn. The enmity was terrible, but today, God intervened, and we now have peace,” he said.

He explained that Governor Oborevwori, who grew up in Warri and witnessed the conflict first-hand, had consistently emphasised the need to preserve peace, noting that no responsible leader would allow such hostilities to return.

“When the Governor spoke, he spoke like an insider, like a son of the soil. His message was clear: for as long as he remains in office, there will be no war. What he wants today is peace because war is not good and nobody should preach it,” Ifeajika stated.

He stressed that the Governor’s recent comments on peace were unfortunately misconstrued and twisted out of context by mischief-makers.

“The Governor was only cautioning that since we have had enough crises in the past, we should now focus on peace and development. His appeal was that if the state can sustain peace till 2031, successive leaders will be encouraged to ensure such fighting never happens again,” he added.

Ifeajika urged all stakeholders to embrace dialogue and development-oriented conversations rather than stoking division, insisting that peace must continue to endure in the Delta for progress to thrive.

He further said, “As His Excellency has stated, we cannot compromise on sustainable peace in Warri. That is why he spoke in a language that we all understand.

“His statement cannot be misinterpreted to mean that the people of Warri can fight after his term. Our people must continue to live as one because no meaningful development can occur without peace.”

He reaffirmed his commitment to the development of Warri, noting that as governor, he would not take sides but serve the interests of all Deltans.

“In all, what we need is unity. I have witnessed a crisis and I know its consequences. People are using social media to cause problems, this must stop. I want to develop Warri because this is my home, and some of the young people today have not enjoyed the Warri we experienced back then,” Oborevwori said.

Recalling his personal experience during a past crisis, he revealed that his father’s house in Igoruwe was spared from destruction simply because it bore the inscription, ‘Sheriff Papa House’, while neighbouring homes were razed.

He described the incident as a lesson on the devastating impact of conflict on communities.

The Governor, who declared “Warri dey sweet me for body,” emphasised his deep connection to the city, adding that he has no other home outside Warri.

“I am a man with street credibility and local content, not from the diaspora. Now that I am Governor, I am a Governor for all, and I will not take sides,” he stressed.

Oborevwori reaffirmed his resolve to fast-track development across the state, assuring that he would not disappoint Deltans.

“I want to do more for Deltans. I don’t want to fail. I will continue to show love to the people and deep respect for our leaders,” he added.

He urged critics to exercise restraint, particularly those outside the state who attempt to sow seeds of discord.

He also called on parents and guardians to caution their children against misusing social media for hate campaigns.

Paying tribute to the late Mrs. Agbolayah, the governor described her as a shining example of faith, integrity, and commitment to family.

“Mama came, saw, and conquered. She served God faithfully and raised her children well, with one now a bishop. My prayer is that the wisdom with which Mama raised you will also guide you in raising your children,” he said.

Earlier, His Eminence Julius Olayinka Abbe, Primate of the African Church, in a sermon titled “Fight a Good Fight” from II Timothy 4:7, urged Christians to live as beacons of peace and integrity in a world filled with darkness.

He admonished believers to be nation-builders, steadfast in faith, and accountable to God.

The funeral service was attended by the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, members of the State Executive Council, and other top government functionaries.
