Delta Ports set for revival as NPA Board meets Oborevwori, stakeholders

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has announced plans to fully revive Delta Ports as part of a broader strategy to boost Nigeria’s economy and decongest Lagos ports.

This came to light during a four-day working tour of the Delta Ports by the Chairman of the NPA Board, Senator Adedayo Adeyeye and his delegation.

The visit included meetings with traditional rulers, port stakeholders, and community leaders.

Adeyeye assured that President Bola Tinubu is committed to revitalising Nigeria’s port infrastructure to generate employment and support economic growth.

“This Board will ensure that the Ports in Delta are fully operational for the economic prosperity of the nation as well as job creation,” Adeyeye declared.

The NPA delegation met with Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the Orodje of Okpe, HRM Orhue I, and the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III.

Both monarchs expressed support for the NPA’s efforts and emphasized the historical and economic importance of the ports in the region.

The Orodje noted that the first port in Nigeria was built in Delta as far back as 1472 by Portuguese explorers, calling for dredging of the Escravos Bar and the River Niger to allow bigger vessels access.

He stressed that viable ports would attract business from landlocked neighbors such as Chad and Niger Republic.

“We cannot succeed in our marine and blue economy plans until our ports are viable. It costs more to offload in Nigeria than in Togo. That must change,” the Orodje said.

The Olu of Warri echoed similar call, noting that Warri’s rise as a commercial hub was rooted in its maritime facilities.

He called for immediate attention to be given to the shallow draught and a critical gas pipeline obstructing larger vessels from berthing.

“We need to redistribute or deepen the pipeline. Once that issue is resolved, everything will fall into place. We are fully aligned with the Federal Government’s plan and will give all necessary support,” the traditional ruler assured.

During engagements with port stakeholders, several operational challenges were highlighted, including collapsed breakwaters, poor dredging, lack of pilotage services, and employment concerns.

The Delta Ports Manager, Mr. Sa’adu Mohammed, noted that while the port infrastructure is underutilized, Delta Ports continue to generate revenue despite difficult conditions.

“We were told the port was dead, but it’s interesting to see revenue being raised. However, the people are not getting the best out of this infrastructure,” Senator Adeyeye said.

To address the recurring issue of shallow draught and siltation, the NPA Chairman announced the establishment of a Delta Channeling Management Company, similar to those operating in Lagos and recently proposed for Calabar Port. This company will be responsible for dredging and keeping waterways navigable year-round.

On youth unemployment and local inclusion in port operations, Adeyeye promised reforms.

“We will look into employment opportunities and ensure that qualified youths from this area benefit. Policies will be made to tackle the core issues raised by the stakeholders,” he said.

Stakeholders also urged the harmonization of tariffs across Nigeria’s ports and the redirection of inland-bound cargo from Lagos to Delta Ports to reduce logistics costs and congestion.

Adeyeye further reaffirmed the NPA Board’s commitment to delivering on its mandate: “It does not make sense for importers servicing the North Central and East to keep using Lagos when Delta Ports are here. We will confront these challenges head-on. The President has given us a clear mandate, solve the problem.”

Oborevwori, Nwoko laud Igbo unification movement

Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has commended the Igbo Unification Movement (IUM) with a promise to always encourage all socio-cultural organisations in the state.

The Governor, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Erijo Johnson, gave the commendation at the

Ogbako-Igbo Zara Igbo Oru na Ndida organised by the Igbo Unification Movement in collaboration with Ndi Na asu BIA Social Cultural Organisation held in Asaba, the state capital.

Oborevwori noted that the Igbo people play a very key and significant role in the nation, adding that the social-cultural organization would further unite the Igbo people wherever the language is spoken.

Oborevwori said: “The Igbo people  play a very key and significant role in our nation, Nigeria, today. This cultural organization seeks further to unite Igbo people wherever the language is spoken, and it is heartwarming.

“The group coming together to bring all Igbo speaking people together in another body is highly commendable and encouraged.

“I am glad that the Senator representing Delta North is here among you today, and the Delta State government will always ensure to provide and encourage all social cultural organizations in our state.”

Senator Ned Nwoko (Delta North) thanked the convener of the event, saying that the Igbo Unification Movement is in line with his philosophy for Anioma State creation.

Senator Nwoko emphasized that Igbo unity is a core value and sometimes wonders why the Delta Igbo is separated from the others.

He said discussions are ongoing among stakeholders to create an additional state for the Igbo as a matter of equity.

He suggested Anioma as a prime candidate for the proposed state, citing its historical significance in the region.

He noted the Anioma State creation was the dream of the forefathers, and called for unity irrespective of political affiliations to achieve the dream and also support the state governor.

Nwoko stated: “We are Igbo wherever we are; we must work together to achieve the Anioma state, and I am supporting the governor  hundred per cent.”

Supporting this call, keynote speaker Prof. Timothy Uzodinma Nwala endorsed the unification movement and the creation of Anioma State.

He stressed the need for inclusive recognition of all Igbo-speaking communities, asserting that unity in identity and purpose is vital for the progress of Ndi Igbo.

  • Delta at 34: Okumagba congratulates Deltans, commends Oborevwori

Delta at 34: Okumagba congratulates Deltans, commends Oborevwori

Prominent Leader of the APC in Delta State and former Commissioner of Finance, Olorogun Bernard Okumagba has congratulated the government and people of Delta State on the 34th anniversary of the creation of the state.

In a congratulatory message, Okumagba lauded “the progress the state has made over the years and in the last two years since Governor Sheriff Oborevwori mounted the saddle.”

Olorogun Okumagba stated  that Deltans have cause to celebrate the anniversary of the creation of the state because over the last three decades plus Delta State has emerged as Nigeria’s leading state in education, sports and in the contribution to the national economy.

“In spite of the challenges of managing a diverse state, Deltans have stayed together and the state has continued to grow from strength to strength. Olorogun Okumagba highlighted the current progressive administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori who has prioritised human capital and infrastructural development.

Olorogun Okumagba further stated that the “responsive leadership style of His Excellency Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has fostered massive infrastructural and social interventions across the state.” He noted that, though there is still a lot to do, “Governor Oborevwori’s transformative and engaging administration gives Deltans cause for hope and celebration as the state marks 34 years.”

Olorogun Okumagba was particularly elated with the Oborevwori administration’s quick response to the cries of travellers into Warri from Benin on account of the bad road, describing the government’s decision to award a contract to reconstruct unmotorable sections of the federal road, a “very worthy decision that will bring relief to the people and other road users.”

Governor Oborevwori had announced the award of reconstruction of the dual carriageway with reinforced concrete from the Spare Parts Market U-turn, Effurun, to Ohore Junction and beyond, before Omenta Bridge, along the Warri–Sapele–Benin Road. The new road cross-section will include an expanded pavement width of 8.8 m, 2.8 m reinforced concrete shoulders, and 12 km of stormwater concrete drains on both sides of the entire road section, including discharges.

Saluting the Governor on the occasion of the anniversary, Olorogun Okumagba said: “You have reignited hope among the people of Delta State that at 34 we can look back on the progress made and see that there are good things around the corner.

Olorogun Okumagba also took notice of the state’s proactive engagement in the electricity market by creating its regulatory agency, exploring the diversification of energy sources to include renewable energy and empowering rural electrification as “very commendable and most appropriate to spur development, especially in suburban and rural communities.”

He observed that “given the integrated social and industrial infrastructure projects being undertaken by the Oborevwori administration, Delta State may well be at the cusp of unlocking more of its economic potential, 34 years after its creation.”

Olorogun Okumagba asked Deltans from all walks of life to continue to support the Oborevwori administration to enable it to succeed and deliver on the dividends of good government. Olorogun Okumagba wished the government and people of the state more years of progress and success.

Oborevwori urges Fed Govt to revive Delta ports

The Governor of Delta State,  Sheriff Oborevwori, has urged the Federal Government to revive the Warri,  Koko, Sapele and Burutu ports and reiterated his administration’s commitment to collaborate with the government at the centre in that regard.

The governor, who spoke yesterday when he received on a courtesy visit, the Board of Directors of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) led by its Chairman, Prince Sen Adedayo Adeleye, said the revival of the seaports would unlock the full economic potential of Delta as Nigeria’s maritime hub.

He insisted that the revitalization of the ports would create jobs, attract investments, and boost national revenue.

He said: “Delta State is strategically blessed with four ports. If these ports are revived, they will create massive employment, stimulate trade, and strengthen the economy of Delta and Nigeria.  It is often more impactful to modernize existing ports than to build new ones”.

He commended the NPA for its modernization efforts but appealed for urgent dredging of the Warri Channel and the rehabilitation of Warri and Koko port facilities, stressing that such interventions needed to be treated as national priorities.

The governor disclosed that Delta was working closely with the Federal Government to tackle critical infrastructural challenges, saying: “These collaborations are already yielding results. The Federal Government has awarded the Summit Junction–Bridge head section of the Benin-Asaba Highway to Heartland Construction Company while the State Government has awarded a section of the Sapele–Warri Road project to CCECC at a cost of N35 billion.

“This is a clear demonstration of the positive relationship between the state and the centre”

Oborevwori assured potential investors of improved security in the state, noting that oil installations were no longer under frequent attacks and that the environment is now peaceful for business.

He added that Delta had enacted a law against collection of illegal levies and harassment of companies to protect investments.

He, however, urged companies operating in the state to honour their Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with host communities by engaging local people, which strategy, he said, was key to sustaining harmony.

Earlier, Senator Adeleye pledged the Board’s readiness to work closely with the Delta State Government to revive the ports in the state and enhance their contribution to Nigeria’s maritime economy.

He said Delta ports — Warri, Koko, Sapele, and Burutu were strategic gateways that, if fully optimized, would boost trade, create jobs, and drive economic growth.

He noted that the NPA Board, inaugurated in June by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola, embarked on a nationwide tour of ports to assess challenges firsthand before implementing solutions.

The NPA boss commended the Delta State Government for supporting security around the ports, stressing that safety remained crucial to sustaining operations.

He also highlighted issues of underutilization, collapsed quays, shallow drafts, and the need for a deep seaport to attract global shipping traffic.

“Delta ports currently contribute about 10.7 per cent of national trade volumes, which is impressive, but there is room for improvement. With stronger collaboration, we can restore the vibrancy of these ports and strengthen Nigeria’s maritime trade,” he said.

  • Oborevwori: Expanding democratic dividends in Delta

Oborevwori: Expanding democratic dividends in Delta

When Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori assumed office as the fifth democratically elected Governor of Delta State on May 29, 2023, he pledged to deliver a people-first agenda built on his MORE agenda of Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security.

Two years into his first tenure, that promise is already reshaping the state’s development trajectory, blending infrastructure with compassion and balancing long-term investments with immediate human needs.

From championing renewable energy to lifting widows out of poverty, and from clearing pension backlogs to sealing landmark energy partnerships, Governor Oborevwori has demonstrated that governance, for him, is about touching lives.

His approach is not only pragmatic but also symbolic – signaling a leadership style that balances hard infrastructure with soft human concerns, ensuring that progress is measured not just in projects, but in the dignity and well-being of the people.

    …Powering Communities Beyond the Grid

Energy remains central to sustainable industrial growth, yet Delta—like most other Nigerian states—continues to grapple with inadequate electricity access, particularly in rural communities.

This challenge persists despite the state hosting major national power assets such as the plants in Ekrerhavwen/Ekakpamre near Ughelli, Ogorode in Sapele, and Okpai in Ndokwa East Local Government Area, all of which feed directly into the national grid.

Determined to change this narrative, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has placed renewable energy at the heart of Delta’s future power strategy, positioning it as the backbone of sustainable electrification and inclusive development across the state.

Speaking at the recent Rural Electrification Agency (REA) State-by-State Roundtable in Abuja, Oborevwori declared that “reliable electricity is a cornerstone for unlocking productivity, attracting investments, and enhancing livelihoods.” With over 22 million Nigerian households still unconnected to electricity, Delta is determined not to lag in this direction.

To this end, the state has developed a Decentralized Energy Plan to power critical institutions such as the Government House, the new State Secretariat Complex, Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba Airport, and the state’s four universities using renewable energy.

Beyond government facilities, Oborevwori’s strategy emphasizes rural communities, schools, and hospitals, where energy poverty has for decades stunted progress.

Renewable sources such as solar, wind, and biomass are no longer experimental, the Governor insists, but “powerful tools for inclusive growth and rural transformation.”

By positioning Delta to tap into national programmes such as the Nigeria Electrification Project and the Energizing Education Programme, the state aims to draw both federal resources and private investors.

Already, the Managing Director of REA, Abba Aliyu, has praised Delta for domesticating the Electricity Act 2023 and creating its own regulatory commission, noting that “these efforts put Delta ahead of most states, positioning it to take charge of its own energy future.” With REA’s $1.16 billion fund for renewable projects waiting to be unlocked, and private investors eyeing ventures such as a 600MW solar panel assembly plant, the opportunities are immense.

According to Delta- born Doris Uboh, the Executive Director of the Rural Electrification Fund, bridging Delta’s electricity gaps could create over 31,200 jobs and attract $158 million in investments. Areas such as Ndokwa East, Burutu, Ughelli South, and Warri South West stand to benefit most, as they remain among the most underserved.

For Oborevwori, the payoff is simple: “This is a win-win situation where investors make profit while Delta gets powered.”

…Compassion at the Centre: A lifeline for widows

Yet, Oborevwori’s governance philosophy is not only about megawatts and infrastructure. He has also made compassion a credible active policy. Nowhere is this clearer than in the Widows’ Welfare Scheme, a landmark initiative flagged off on Monday,  18th August 2025 to support 10,000 widows across Delta.

Read Also: Oborevwori calls for calm amid rising Itsekiri-Urhobo tensions in Warri

“Being a widow is not by choice, and it will never be anyone’s choice,” the Governor said at the launch. “Beyond the pain of losing a loved one, widows are left with the burden of survival. That is why this administration is determined to improve their living conditions and give them hope.”

Under the scheme, each widow will receive N15,000 monthly, with three months paid in arrears to ease immediate burdens and the beneficiaries accounts were immediately credited.

More importantly, all beneficiaries are being enrolled in the Delta State Contributory Health Insurance Scheme, guaranteeing free medical care at accredited facilities across the state.

For women like Christiana Akaluzia and Elizabeth Mukoro, the gesture is more than financial aid, it is dignity restored.

What makes the scheme particularly groundbreaking is its non-political, community-driven design. Beneficiaries were identified across all 270 wards of the state, vetted by traditional rulers, civil society groups, and community leaders to ensure only genuine widows benefit. Politicians and civil servants were deliberately excluded.

Coordinated by the Governor’s Executive Assistant on Social Investment Programmes, Elder Isioma Okonta, the scheme reflects a continuation of Oborevwori’s social welfare legacy.

Since 2023, over 266,000 people have benefited from empowerment initiatives, youth programmes, and business grants. The widows’ scheme, however, is uniquely personal, drawing inspiration from the Governor’s long-standing private commitment to supporting widows before he entered public office.

“This is governance with a human face,” said Okonta. “The Governor has become a father to widows and a pillar of support for the poor.”

    …Restoring dignity to retirees

While widows represent one vulnerable group, another constituency has also received the Governor’s attention: pensioners. For decades, retirees in Delta have struggled with unpaid arrears, leading to frustration, poverty, and, in some cases, premature deaths.

Determined to change the narrative, Oborevwori, Tuesday, approved the immediate  release of N10 billion to clear outstanding pension backlogs.

Meeting with the Pension Board and leaders of retirees, the Governor acknowledged that arrears predated his administration, but insisted they must be tackled with urgency. “Our retirees are men and women who gave their best years in service to the state. It is only just that they receive what is duly owed to them,” he said.

The N10 billion release comes on top of N36.4 billion already paid out in pensions since his assumption of office. The state also continues to release N1.4 billion monthly to meet ongoing obligations. For retirees who had lost hope, the announcement was a welcome surprise.

“You took us unawares; what we were expecting was far less,” said Comrade Anthony Osanekwu, State Chairman of the Association of Contributory Retirees. “I am elated, and I know that when pensioners across the state hear this news, they will be very happy.”

By constituting an oversight team to supervise disbursement, Oborevwori also sent a message about transparency. For him, clearing pension backlogs is not only about settling debts but also about restoring dignity to senior citizens.

The Governor also on Wednesday in Abuja, paid a condolence visit to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, over the death of his mother, Mama Lydia Yilwatda.

Oborevwori, who was accompanied by members of the National Assembly from Delta State including Hon. Nicholas Mutu, Hon. Francis Waive, Hon. Nnamdi Ezechi, and Hon. Ngozi Okolie as well as his Senior Political Adviser, Senator Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, noted that the late matriarch lived a fulfilled life, raising a family that has produced a professor, a minister, and now the National Chairman of the ruling party.

…A leadership philosophy rooted in balance

What unites Oborevwori’s renewable energy drive, widows’ welfare scheme, and pension bailout is a leadership philosophy anchored on balance: infrastructure and compassion, jobs and dignity, megawatts and monthly stipends.

This blend reflects the central spirit of the MORE Agenda—inclusiveness. As the governor puts it: “As we build roads, bridges, and infrastructure, we must also invest in the welfare of our people. True governance is not just about physical projects but about touching lives and giving hope.”

Analysts note that this deliberate mix of hard and soft policies creates a unique governance ecosystem. Energy investments promise long-term growth, while welfare interventions deliver immediate relief. Together, they uplift both the economy and the most vulnerable.

For Delta’s widows, pensioners, and rural communities still waiting for electricity, these policies represent more than statistics—they are lifelines. For investors and development partners, they signal a state open to business and social innovation.

For Governor Oborevwori, they embody his vision of a Delta where development is meaningful, opportunities abound, reforms are realistic, and peace is enduring. Still, the ultimate test lies in consistent delivery.

Renewable energy projects must advance from policy papers to solar panels; stipends must flow without disruption; and pension arrears must never again be allowed to pile up. Yet, if the early momentum is any indication, Sheriff Oborevwori is determined to govern with both power and compassion—electrifying communities while lighting up lives.

Oborevwori reaffirms administration’s dedication to inclusive governance

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to inclusive governance during a recent empowerment event in Oginibo, Ughelli South Local Government Area of the state.

He applauded the State Commissioner for Works, Comrade Reuben Izeze, for facilitating the FOOSTODEY/Comrade Izeze Empowerment Scheme, which has financially supported 500 beneficiaries, including 300 women entrepreneurs and 200 elderly individuals.

Represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Johnson Erijo, Governor Oborevwori highlighted the importance of grassroots empowerment and recognized Izeze’s unwavering commitment to uplifting the community.

He assured Deltans that his administration would continue to enhance and expand initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of citizens, emphasizing that every community must experience the benefits of democracy.

Moreover, the Governor expressed gratitude towards women for their ongoing support and reiterated his pledge to an inclusive approach where all residents can share in the progress of the state.

In his remarks, Comrade Izeze explained that his motivation for public service is rooted in the desire to uplift communities and support the vulnerable.

He noted that the scheme reflected Oborevwori’s inclusive leadership, symbolized by his traditional title ‘Ukodo’ — a meal associated with unity.

He said: “Supporting our people, especially small-scale entrepreneurs and the elderly, is the true essence of leadership.

“The essence of being a commissioner is not in big cars or buildings, but in the public good. This is our way of contributing to Governor Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, and we will continue to strengthen women, youth, and students whenever the opportunity arises.”

The initiative provided financial support to 300 small-scale entrepreneurs—traders, bakers, fruit sellers, and food vendors, as well as 200 elderly persons, many without family support.

Izeze emphasised that empowering women has a far-reaching impact, describing them as tireless campaigners and faithful voters.

Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Adogbeji Ideh, lauded Izeze as a vibrant politician who cares for those at the grassroots. Other speakers, including the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Community Support Services and Girl Child Development, Orode Uduaghan, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Community Development, Hon Pat Ajudua, and Chairman of Ughelli South Local Government Council, Hon. Dr. Lucky Awreromre, urged beneficiaries to invest the resources wisely.

She urged beneficiaries to see the support as a seed for growth that can inspire others.

The highpoint of the ceremony was the symbolic presentation of dummy cheques to three beneficiaries—Mrs. Ejevwentotor Currency, Elohor Atori, and Mike Vivian.

Warri youths’ clash: Oborevwori, UPU, others sue for peace

Amid growing concerns over weekend’s clash between the Itsekiri and Urhobo youths in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has appealed for calm, restraint, and peaceful coexistence among stakeholders in the area.

The Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), and its youth wing, as well as the Warri Rebirth Initiative, also joined the call for the warring parties to sheathe their swords.

In an official statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor urged residents of the oil-rich city to avoid any actions capable of threatening the hard-earned peace and stability in the region.
